Welder Question...

I only have one complaint about a welder like that when talking about welding thinner metal.

The voltage setting appears to be 4 positions. I prefer an infinite adjustment. It has been my experience that the perfect setting will almost always be between two of those settings.

Of course you can adjust and learn to compensate for this.

Outside of that, appears to be gas ready and would probably make a nice welder for the thin stuff. If its not gas ready, I would definitely no buy it for welding anything thin.
 
Okay I didn't know whether or not that would make a difference. Ill look for something else that has a different adjustment system then. Thanks!
 
Do it right the first time, buy one that comes set up for gas. If I'm not mistaken the one in you link does not come gas ready and you have to buy a seperate kit. Also some of the shelf ready units won't have a roller for .023 wire.

Hobart Handler 140 would be a good sheet metal welder and it is gas ready.

Thats another one I was looking at... Deuling on here has one and he loves it. This is most likely the route that I am gonna go.

What migs have infinite adjustment? When I was shopping around considering a 220 machine even the machines up to 2k still had amperage levels.

Plus the 140 will burn 3/16ths awesomely and 1/4in with some patients.
 
my Miller 180 has infinite adjustment.... whereas the Hobarts in the same price range are stepped adjustment..

Infinite adjustment just means you can turn the dial tiny amounts to fine tune things. "Infinite" is a bad term I guess. That's the welding industry terminology though, not mine.

There is still a maximum and minimum. All of my welders at the shop have "infinite adjustment."

No no I knew what you meant its just every MIG Ive ever shopped around for had stepped adjustment.
 
I have that welder with the gas regulator. I can speak for the quality of the welder. It is as nice and welds as well as any 110 welder I've ever used with flux core wire. I havent found a deal on a bottle yet, so I can not report on the ability to weld sheetmetal.

OH, OK, I re-read your question and in that light understand where you were coming from.

I see alot of both but haven't been welder shopping in a long time either.

The Lincolns have the non-stepped adjustments. I have a 125 and it's "infinite". I've been very happy with it, but I would have bought the 140 because it comes with the gas setup if I'd known. I'd like to jump to a big miller in a little bit here...
 
I have a Lincoln 180 that i run on gas and it's been an awesome unit especially for only costing 600. It has the steped amperage controls but that's what i've always had and i'm used to it. Generally it doesn't cause an issue, if I notice a lack or excess of amperage I can make up for the amperage gap with the feed rate. I've welded everything from 18g to 3/8" plate with no issues. I'd go with gas and 220 if I were you this is my 4th welder and i've stepped up a size each time and wish I would have just started with a beefier unit from the start.
 
Thanks for all the advice guys. I think what I am going to do after doing a lot of research is save up as much money as I can by the summer and by that time get the biggest one I can afford. I don't wanna buy something and then have limitations.
 
Not sure how much you wanted to spend but I believe all Millers are on sale til Dec 31. I just picked up a Miller 211 w/ auto set for $1k. They retail for near $1300
