I own a Firepower welder, it's good for everything I needed up until now. It's good for steel up to 1/8, a great Nood-(NOOB) tool. I would like to get a better machine so I could start fab work like sliders and front bumper. I was looking at a machine that's good up to 3/16 steel. I can't get involved with tanks of gas right now so do you guys think this machine would work for what I'm planning?

if at all possible, go with a 220 machine...

Agreed.... 110 machines have gotton alot better but they just don't lay em down like the 220's do. Look for some used ones out of fab shops... usually theres a few places that are looking to unload a welder or two and most times they are good machines for cheap. We sold a few machines for around 400-600 bucks that were worth 3k new.

I use a miller 130 around the house. It will and does burn hot enough..I abuse my crap and no broken welds yet:D

most of the brackets and parts i fab for the truck or buggy are 1/4 inch or 3/8. It handles 1/4 inch no problem i just slow it down a bit and it has a great HAZ zone. 3/8 is a little tricky and have to really concentrate to get it right.

The bottle is not too bad to get into and most welder shops will have rental units, go in and ask them some questions. I think is was like 85.00 to get a filled aluminum bottle out the door. For around the house the bottle last forever.

Correction my welder does weld up to 3/16 steel. I'm not sure if I should bother looking for a better unit right now.

You could weld a little thicker too as long as you bevel 100% and make SURE you get all the flux out between welds.... a wire wheel on a grinder does the trick nicely... also these work pretty good. (needle gun)
