I have been looking at getting a Hobart Mig welder because of the price and everybody speaks pretty highly of them. Something in the 150+ amp 220v because I don't want to spend the money on a 110v welder. I saw this Lincoln the other day at Home Depot. My question is why is it so cheap? It's a 175 amp Mig welder and comes with some accessories but is about $150 dollars cheaper than the Lincoln 175 :thinking::dunno:

amps is not the only important thing to look at when you buy a welder, duty cycle is also a key figure, you need to look at duty cycle and think about how much welding you're planning on doing, most of us will never need 100% duty cycle, because think about welding for 10minutes solid... thats a LONG time...

but then keep in mind that, if you plan to weld say for 6minutes or 8 minutes at a time, and the duty cycle is 60% at the amperage you'll be running, then welding at the 6minutes or 60% of the duty cycle is just like taking your engine to redline and then shutting the key off over and over again which wears on a machine...
 
I just bought a miller 180, works pretty good so far. It was only 100 bucks more than the hobart 187 and the miller has continous voltage adjustment (hobart does not).

that home depot lincoln welder works great. as long as you get a 220v welder, you'll be stylin. i've used miller's version of that same welder, and i think lincoln make a more durable welder. where i work, we use the piss out of those things. get the $600 lincoln mig welder, it'll do everything you need it to do.
 
Tap voltage= selectable voltage, such as the hobart 187 has 7 voltage settings.
Infinite voltage=dial a voltage, such as the miller 180 which you can just dial the voltage up or down in small increments instead of just a selectable setting.
 
I've got the Hobart 180 (220 volt). It has the 4 switch positions for voltage and infinite wire speed controls.

I've hit the duty cycle limit 2 times welding 1/4" plate. I have been happy with the Hobart.

I've had one problem. The liner had a kink that I didn't find until I used it a couple of times that was causing wire feed problems. I called Hobart and they shipped me a new liner no other questions asked.

I went with Hobart b/c of the quality customer support people posted about. Hobart uses a Miller gun.

it was $460...free shipping and free cart...i believe it will do what i want(3/16''&down), if not, i have a 250A 220v stick welder and a tig torch, i want it mainly for body panels and prolly my cage, parts of it at least, i'll prolly tig my base plates and gussets, and later on, i plan on getting the spool gun and setting it up for aluminum welding w/ argon...swap gas ...add spoolgun and aluminum ready
 
I believe people do 1/4" with the 140's as well. Good prep and bled es will help too. I was gonna get the Hobart 187, but it was equally priced to the Lincoln so..
 
yea, i mean... multiple passes and it can weld 1/2-1'', but anything heavy i'll use a 7018 stick....this will be for thin stuff...a 125 would prolly do what i want
 
I probably would have went with Hobart. Last time I was shopping for a welder I was looking at small portables. I chose the Hobart Champion 10000 over a Lincoln Ranger because Hobart is made by Miller and I actually like that the Hobarts have less features than the Millers and Lincolns because it makes them super simple to use without extra dials and switches.
