Is it possible to weld the 14bff without messing up the backlash? I really know nothing about setting up gears but I have friends who weld? is it possible, how? hope to get this done this weekend.

Just mark the adjusting collars before you take it apart and put it back together the way you found it.

Yes.

I use a punch and make one mark on the collar, and then another on the housing across from it on the left. Then I make two punches in the right side collar and two across from that. I turn the collars exactly two turns, remove the carrier, do whatever work is necessary, then reinstall it, adjust the collars back where they were, torque everything to spec, and get 'er all put back together and you're done.

no it wont mess up the backlash. Check it before you take it apart and reset it to that when u put it back together. remember to put some preload on the bearings.
