I got a SM465/NP205 figure eight adapter. While reinstalling my cross member I over torqued the 2 bolts going through the cross member into the adapter and broke the adapter where the bolts go through. Should I get a new adapter, or should I take it off and go get the broken piece welded back on. If I was going to weld it back on, I think I would drill it out and use a nut and bolt, instead of having the bolt thread into the adapter. Would getting it welded up be good as new since its cast???

Personally, I would get a new one. Cast is a Mother****** to weld and get it right IMO. I know of one guy around here that is pretty good with cast welding, but ....................... Your call.

I'd get a new one. I don't know if its cast iron or steel but either way it will have tons of oil soaked into it and you won't get a strong weld out of it.

dang it thats not what i wanted to hear, oh well time to post in the wanted section

I welded up a cracked 465-205 adaptor. It's finicky as it's cast iron, not cast steel. I prepped the cracked areas, hit them up with brake clean and warmed the whole adaptor up to 250 F. Then I welded the cracks up a little at a time with NiRod, peened the surface of the welds while maintaining some heat on it (post heat) and when it was all done I buried the adaptor in a large bucket of sand so it would not cool too quickly. 10 hours later it was still warmer than ambient.

I ran that repaired adaptor for 4 years after with no further cracking or leaking, and only replaced it when I did a clutch and ran across another adaptor for $20.

Finding an uncracked adaptor is a whole lot less work...if you can find one. They're usually scarce when you need one.
