I personaly would stick to a Lincon for the small welders. I havent heard anything bad about the Craftsman..... Just prefrence.....

I just bought the lincoln from sears I think it is the lincoln 125 with helmet and some other stuff for $299 brand new. Just a thought. And it has everything to do MIG all I have to do is get the bottle.

Once a year tractor supply has a crazy deal on Hobart welders. I bought a Hobart 180 (came with cart,gloves, auto darking hood and wire brush and slag hammer) for $560. The 180 is bigger than the 110 units and didn't cost that much more.

that welder is not big enough for more than 1/4 " steel if that, not enough penetration

yea thats why it says 1/8" , but it is something to learn on for now and I will switch to a bigger one when I can afford it and need it. so for now this will be ok, plus I have use of a stick welder too if i need to do anything thicker.

Don't even waste your time with anything under 125 amps. It'll just make ya mad.

You won't learn anything usefull on a machine like that either. Would you go buy a Honda 50 motorcycle to "learn" on just because it was cheap?

Save your pennies and buy one that you can always use. What are your plans?

Once you start, you will probably find more projects and outgrow it pretty fast.

I partially disagree. That will give you the basics for welding and you can do quite alot with it. A 110 machine is nice as you can take it and use it anywhere and most decent generators will run them. I have one and take it out in my 5th wheel when we go to the beach (I have had to use it several times). For the bigger stuff I go steal my bros mig or use my stick welder.

I totally agree with a bigger machine not making you mad when you need to weld larger material or have a longer bead to weld (its a pain in the a$$ when you overload it and trips the breaker). My next rig is the Lincoln 215.

Bottom line is if you have the $$ get the bigger unit, if not use the crap out of the little one and make friends with someone who has a bigge one.

The original welder posted is a Craftsman Professional, They were made by Century, which was bought out by Lincoln.

I have a 155GS that has worked great since I bought it. I just bought a new liner for it even though I am not sure if the old one was bad??
