Ok I have a roll cage in my k5 now this was the one out of the original UAV in order to make it fit I had to cut the roof off the rig. Now I want to install this in a new k5 but want to keep the original roof over my head. So the question is can I ground out the welds that hold the legs from the floor to the halo out put back in the new k5 and reweld the tube? I dont see why I cant do this but need some other opinions on this.

Your post is pretty hard to understand there Bo, but I think you're asking if you can grind out the welds that hold the A and B pillar to the halo so that you can reinstall that cage (which would now be in a few pieces) into a Blazer with a top. If that is correct:

Yes, you can do it but the tube fitment won't be very good. That means that your welds will be weaker.

I would go ahead and do it, but remember that gussets are your friend. They take TONS of stress off of those weld joints.

I think all he's asking is if he can shorten the legs to fit. No problems with that. Trim it down and re-weld. :grind: :weld:

either way....gussets are good....just dont install them in the center of the tube...take the gusset out to the edge of the tubing to prevent the gusset from acting like a can opener on the tubing

   say what?

ur not supposed to put the gusset at the center or very bottom of the tube....ur supposed to bring it out to the edge as far as possible so that it wont stick the point thru the tubing as easy

ur still not making any sense to me

A drawing maybe? I'm talking about gussets made of tube (which I thought was implied).

I didn't know round tubing had any edges

aaaa... i'm talking about .090 plate gussets, chassis engineering book says place them on out side of the corner so that the gusset won't act like a can opener on the tubing....gussets from tubing, definitly centered with good tight fitting fishmouth...sorry, gussets mentioned i auto think nascar rules...sorry wasn't even thinking of gusseting tubing with tubing....daaa!

That's what I guessed after I read your second reply.

and i've been pipefitting/pipe welder for 16 yrs. been welding since i was 12....35 now,...i feel kinda dumb, but on my behalf, i must say u did just say"gusset" which is primarily plate...i wish i could put a tubing gusset on my dirt track car from ''a'' pillar to trans tunnel, but dang brake pedal & accelarator access is of concern at bottom of ''a'' pillar post on anything really, what can u use in the bottom of ''a'' pillar, sideways, other than a plate gusset?

"Gusset" doesn't necessarily mean tube, that's just what we were talking about.

There are lots of plate gussets on cages too.

hence i asked what can u use in the bottom of ''a'' pillar, sideways, other than a plate gusset?b/c of brake pedal & accelarator

Jesus man....No need to overthink things. :D Chassis engineering? :eek1: No rocket science to anything that goes on around here.
