welding off two batteries

This is what I did .Cheap and it works great :D

I dont understand why more people dont run this setup.A trip to Pick n Pull and you can pretty much have a welder :D

very very cool.... and actually if i did the 12v conversion to my truck, i could keep the second alternator and battery as my welder circuit..... interesting...... im at work so i cant read the whole thread, but i will when i get home.

... i could keep the second alternator and battery as my welder circuit...

That would be cool since it is already mounted on the engine.

But you dont need a battery for the welder setup. The positive lead comes directly from the positive post on the alternator and the negative comes right off of the block :thumb:

well what im thinking would be a seperate "power supply" station in the back of the truck. split the output of the alternator with a t or y or whatever you want to call it. run unregulated to the welding cables, the install a regulator on the other circuit run to an inverter and have 120v outlets in the rear of the truck for electrical tools or boomboxes/lights for tailgating and such. That way if i killed the battery playing a radio while the truck was sitting, i still crank it up and drive away on the good battery.

That sound interesting

Aint never seen on of those. Those used in police or ambulance applications?

Was a take off from a Ford F550 cab and chassis slated to become a rescue/emergency truck.

Fawesome.....

Frizz most of the pics in that thread are too old too show up. How did you rig a 110v plug in there? Most of the off the shelf iverters I've tried won't run a 7 amp grinder for more then a second. Also what'd you pay for the alternator?

I was hoping somebody would chime in with something like that. My wife's cousin set up a similar unit running off an old snow blower motor. When I saw the thing I was like...why don't you throw that puppy under the hood. Well, now he has trail side tig and arc capabilities. F'in awesome if you ask me. I never got the details other than it didn't cost him that much to re-wrok the alternator.

I fixed the pics a while ago.Its the old smilies that dont work :p: I paid nothing for that alt.I just had it layin around (Im a Ford guy )

I decided not to run 110v outlets off the alt.Running the engine at 2k+ RPM for how ever long you need 110v didnt seem like a good idea.(So I got an inverter .I will get to that in a minute :D)

Prime example of extended 110v use,
Avery4jc and myself were on the Rubicon last week in my Toyota.A guy had ripped his passenger side lower link mounts off the front axle.In camp at Buck Island he probably did a total of 2+ hours of grinding with a flap disc and cutoff wheels off my inverter with a 4 1/2" grinder. At idle the alternator (not the one for the welder) could more than keep up with the draw of the inverter.

So with the inverter its 2+ hours at idle rather than 2+ hours at 2k RPM to get 110v off of the welder alt.

Now the inverter I have is not a toy .Its a Statpower/Prowatt 1750 watt inverter .I could run a micowave,4 1/2" grinder, and the ol ladys hair dryer at the same time :haha: I got it new off eBay to my door for less than $100.A little vendor oops in my favor :D

You can full on lean on and nearly stall a 4 1/2" grinder and it doesnt even care :pimp: It runs an air mattress pump pretty sweet too :D

An inverter is the way to go for extended 110v power needs :D

good info.... just for the record... fock cheap inverters.

my brother bought one from wally world and if you lean on it with dremel at all it shuts off. No fuse... just a safety shut off. I've tried a few others and weren't too happy with em.

Glad to hear that I can run a grinder off my rig.... Can I borrow a hundy?

X2 on the invertor. I have a 1500 watt in my K5, Its what I use to power my 1/2 HP OBA compressor and any other power tool, Also does a good job running the blender.:wink1:
