A vertical weld in the wrong place could cause a severe weak spot.... other then that though theres not much too it.

hmm looks like he said COULD cause a problem.

Kidjethro your a tool, cocky or not this kid was right and he STARTED out respectfully in this thread.
The way I see it you attacked him in this thread.

To the Original poster , theres as many opinions on welding frames as there are asholes on PBB ( and apparently here by all the bandwagon jumpers in this thread) use some common sense and you'll be fine weld away buddy "it'll buff out"

Fabrimacator21, get your panties out off a twist your young People are gonna tell you that you dont know your sh!t ........ and to a point there right. Let them talk listen to what they have to say lay your pride aside you may learn something.

So are you still pissed?

LOL maybe a little, I get on CK5 because its got a nice polite laid back feel to it. If I wanted to deal with cock-munchers who think there better than everyone cuz they've bent some tube and burned some metal together I'd be on PBB . I hate bullys too so any time I see some one get pushed around or ganged up on it pisses me off .

Plus my girls in New Mexico,I haven't wheeled in two years,I haven't had a beer in 2 months,I haven't slept in 3 days, and I just turned 30............. I might be a bit agitated.

you need a friend, short list for you

1. the bar
2. straight piece of tube, or pipe since your in AK
3. Left hand..switch it up!
4. ever felt the steering wheel of a ferrari.. damn near got me off
5. sleep number bed, you will never leave

as for turning 30

I have an ugly ass friend, 34 years old, does not work, lives with mom, and is always dating 18 to 20 year olds..current one it hot, likes the desert and wheeling, and buys his car parts!

if that looser can do it..

LOL thanks I got 20 more days on this hitch and then I can complete the list!!

oh and I have been switching it up even tried the "stranger"

Supersize's run-on recap reminds me of:

Well, let's see. First the earth cooled. And then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died and they turned into oil. And then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes...

My god. You ARE a moron. And an immature one to boot. Whats the point of a PM if you're just gonna copy and paste it here for everyone to see?

Go ahead and run away with your tail between your legs you god damn jack ass. You've got 4 years formal training, you're 22 years old and you've been doing this since you were 14? Somethin doesn't add up. Highschool metal shop doesn't count.

Some examples of my "garage fab"-

Thats a badarse doubler cross member. I need one for my truck. I couldn't build one if i wanted to. I would probably hurt myself trying . what would you want to build another

Stress risers/frame welding

Wow, long thread with little to no useful info...

Seeing as how this never got resolved i figured I'd bring it up again.

So, my question is... From what I've read, it seems as though vertical welds in-between the axles are where you run into potential trouble... With that said, what are my options for welding square mounts onto a frame? Along with body mounts/ anything held on with rivets? (frame is being boxed and would rather weld than adapt everything to make it bolt on)

Whether or not our trucks see enough stress to make these stress risers break is beside the point. There is a correct way to do this.

As for the pissing contest, I'd give the win to fab...not only was he correct but he proved it by bringing up stress risers, while KJ had only opinions .

My 'opinions' come from 15+ years of experience.

There is nothing special about the steel in the frames of these trucks. There is nothing special about the frames period. If you want to weld something to your trucks frame, just go do it. Assuming your frame is in good shape in the first place, you wont have any problems. These aren't nasa rocket engines or nuclear submarine hulls. Just stick with basic welding/fab fundamentals, don't over think it...and burn some wire. Or rod or whatever.

Fab guy didn't prove anything more than that he knows what a stress riser is. He probably read it in a book somewhere. Worrying about a 'stress riser' in the clapped out, loose, out of square, rivited and wobbly frames these trucks have is ridiculous. If we were building an Ultra 4 car or some super precise structural thing, then going all super rip-snorting welder fab pro is what you should do.

I'd say my frame cut easier with a sawzall than the steel I welded onto it

I understand where you're comming from. And I'm not saying you're wrong.

You are correct that there is nothing special about the frames, but stress risers due to heat are basic welding knowledge...especially when joining thicker and thinner metals. These are not NASA projects or submarines, but if you take your rig on the road you are risking your life and whoever is nearby when it tears and you lose control of your truck.

As far as the my mounts go, I will probably just weld them on as is. It is my opinion that they probably will not see enough stress to break, as the suspension should soak most of it up...but then again it won't have to contend with hits at speed(which is where I would be worried) since it's gonna be a trailer queen.

Thread got bumped to correct misinformation that could potentially lead to catastrophic vehicle failure.

It's more the location and position of the weld that make a difference...there are proper and safe ways to weld to your frame, none of which include straight vertical lines.

When you lengthen/shorten/splice/modify a frame there are time tested methods to prevent stress risers from vertical welds..."Z" cuts, fishmouth and diamond plates, stitch welds, and pigtails off of welds are not in use just because they look neat...

It is attitudes like "just go do it" that give car/truck modifiers a bad image. Especially if said vehicle is driven on the road. Again, you're not just risking you're life but also anyone who is around you when your mount rips off your frame.

As for my frame/mounts, I've looked into using fishmouth or diamond plates for the bases. Would mean reworking every mount, possibly making new ones. Have thought about stitch and plug welds, but question the strength there also...Any ideas?

All of the mounts that have yet to be made will be fishmouthed or diamond cut...look forward to the build thread ; )

Again, this only applies to boxed frames. If you're keeping the "C" you're better off making everything bolt on to avoid stress risers altogether.

I would say ANY weld is a good weld IF and I say IF it's done correctly. Vertical, horizontal, angled, whatever. I don't see at all why this thread has turned into such a debate. Like was said, it's NOT rocket science. It's design that comes into play with regard to IF something will fail or not. I personally would have no problem welding a vertical weld if it was the right method and a good designed structure. And welding on the frame it self is no issue at all, it's just mild steel as was also already said.

What I would not do is weld directly to an edge of the open "C" of the frame. THAT is where a crack can and will develope.

One method I see guys do all the time is when boxing the frame. They plate and weld right at the open "C" edges. I personally think this is not a good method. I would set the plate inside the open "C" about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch so there is no weld right to the edge of the frame. It's still boxed but with no weld points to allow a crack to start at since it's set back from the edges.

Most know that a weld is a crack point or a failure point if done in a bad location where flexing is still alowed right at a welded joint. Also, the boxing plates at each end of the plates should not just stop along the frame edge. They should be bent inward and tapered and angled into the frame "C" and about a 45 or shollower angle and welded to the vertical wall of the frame. That way the weld it not just stoped at the frame open "C" edge.

What you guys seem to be missing is that even if a weld is done perfectly, there will always be a heat induced stress line. Which is only made worse when welding different thickness materials (thicker material will pull heat out of the thinner faster than two pieces of the same thickness)...unless you have harnessed cold fusion in your garage, you're in the same predicament when welding to the frame.

Yes, there are correct and incorrect ways to go about boxing a frame, but that's another thread.

Again, this is not rocket science. Just basic welding/metallurgy knowledge...do it the right way, or question your ability to complete a project of this scale/importance.

It's your truck, do what you want...but post a pic of that death machine, so if I see it I can go the other way : )
