Welding on the frame

I have been a member on this site for 10 years. I have seen a vast number of people on this site able and willing to help anyone that had a question and give of their knowledge freely. You seen to be very book wise, but you are dumber than a box of rock when it comes to common sense. This is a very friendly site and loaded with people that work on their toys. Have not seen you work, you choose to not show your work. I think if you were to try Pirate with your attitude, you would not have lasted this long. They probably banned you and that why you are here.:D Your whole post is that you are righteous right and we are all incompetent. You just don't get the point. it not that your right or wrong, its your attitude.:whistle:

Haha ok, I get it. You all are just butt hurt because you ruined your frames, and you can't swallow your pride for safety's sake. Even if just to inform people on how to do it a better way in the future.

Just to clarify, If you have a cage tied into the frame the chances of a crack or a rip are greatly reduced...which is what people seem to be confusing with "experience"...experience is great, but it's not what's holding their mounts on or keeping their frame solid. It's the frame having less flex than it had before the cage.

No, never joined pirate...they're reputation on real fab forums was made by threads like this one.

In the end...it's your truck, do what you want. Just know there are methods and procedures for welding to frame for a reason.

I'm out ck5

Now that thats over with we can get back to the discussion about whether cake or pie is better and why.

Opening statements counselors?

Heres my pie credentials. Only the crust has vertical welds, cause we all know thats the safest spot.

O and on a side note did this guy ever even try to tell us how to properly vertically weld on a frame after yelling about how we should do it properly 40 times?

Dang, looks like I missed all the fun.........
I am not too old to do the stuff I did today, but I am getting too crippled.... This keeps up, I'm gonna have to get that hip replaced.......

From what I can see, the only example he posted, was a poorly boxed frame, with welds so badly done that most of them cracked.
As anyone who has actually welded things that need to stay together knows, vertical welds require a little more skill than horizontal welds.

Sounds like the co-worker had enough experience to do a flat weld, but not vertical ones.
Of course, he tries to make the point that vertical welds are not strong enough, after admitting that a weld should be as strong as the original material.

So, why did the welds break instead of the material between them? Because they were poor welds.

As for the argument about heat stress risers, they are real. Everybody who takes any welding courses finds out about them, although they are not always called the same thing.
But, they are not always the kiss of death to a weld, and they do not always occur.
If the weld is not going to be flexed, they will most likely never be noticed.

Also, if the weld heat has time to soak far enough from the weld and cool slowly enough, they do not form.
Thus the 30 ton arm, or whatever, I'm too lazy now to go back and look, did not develop the stress risers because the weld undoubtedly took a while due to the thickness, which let the heat spread, and then the mass of the metal caused a slow enough cooling that it did not harden.

I wish I had a picture of the two wheel dolly I rewelded up in Quincy Fl. many years ago.
Best example of heat stress risers you will ever see.

It had a steel loop instead of the flat pan sticking out in front. I was working on some equipment, and they brought it over to see if I could weld it for them.

I took one look, and told them to leave it. There was about 7 inches of weld beads side by side with the loop cracked at the end.
I started to count how many times it had been welded, but quit at about 15.

Ground a deep V in the steel, and welded it up with a stick. Then I fired off a rosebud and got the new weld and the old welds nice and red hot.
Laid it on a piece of railroad iron they used for an anvil, and blended the welds together with a hammer..

Then I took a chance and quenched it in plain water. It didn't crack.
Ground it shiny, and tempered it to gunmetal. Figured that might be too much, but I did not want it to crack.
Sure enough, the first time they used it, it flexed and bent slightly.

Took it back, rehardened it, and this time I took it to dark straw.

Two years later, when some idiot backed a truck over it, it still had not cracked at the welds.
Didn't crack then either, but the rest of it warped pretty good......

 Damn it he figured us out :doah:

Good Lord! You cannot put a slice of lime that close to the vertical edge of the crust. The dryness of the crust will absorb the moisture from the lime and that could make the crust fail where the vertical meets the horizontal plane. This will also make the lime dry and not useable in a margarita.

The dry crust may be fine and hold up while on your plate but as soon as you attempt to move it with your fork it will fail at the worst possible time, halfway to your mouth!!

Yes I am a key lime pie expert having eaten about every key lime pie I could get my hands on from store bought to fabricated from scratch and that is the internet truth. Fine don't believe me but when your crust fails don't come crying to me. Just trying to save the pie.

:haha::haha::haha: That is funny!!!!

This thread was amazing....Im amazed that its so difficult for a person to listen to those that have had real life experience. I have gotten some information from people on CK5 that was not to be had anywhere, including Pirate which I am also a member of. If he had just listened and set his arrogance aside think of what he could have learned!

I logged on just so I could reply to this...thread.

This guy is obviously one of those boys who has a friend who has done it, or a dad that did it, or a cousin, or a school friend. Point is, he saw or read something and figured that little bit of knowledge justifies the insulting and annoying way he attempted to "right a wrong" within the CK5 community.

Personally, I am surprised he wasn't banned earlier on in the thread. I know you guys are normally a bit forgiving but DAMN. He got under my skin and I didn't even have a dog in this fight.

During my younger military days, this is the kind of kid we got drunk and left down town (50 miles from base) drunk off his ass with no money. When he got back to base we all were "so sorry but we thought you went home before we left". Then when he got stupid again, we did it again. Those types never get it...never learn. Which was proven here in this thread.

Not only was this guy a FNG, he was also a SLF (stupid little...). Props to how well you all put up with him.
