welding rear quarters after floor swap ?

<font color=purple> As you all know, I just completed a rear floor and tailpan swap ............. everything is bolted in place but has not been welded. If it's all bolted in is it safe to say I can weld the floor to the side pillars on the rear of the quarters and everything should line up for the tailgate ? I would assume so since it's in the same place as the old floor with it all bolted in and the topper in place. I have a guy coming tomorrow night to weld it if it's o.k. ............if there's something I'm overlooking, please let me know a.s.a.p. ! Thanks

The only thing I would be careful of is the width of the rear opening of the box. Make sure both rear support posts are 'plumb' and that your width is wider than the tailgate...

I would think 1/4" wider than the tailgate all the way up would be close to factory.
As for the welding to the inside along the sides at the rear make sure it is tacked in many places, otherwise the welding will cause the floor to dip up or down from the heat.

Yup, thats what I thought you were talkin about. I'd cut a 2x4 as a brace between the box sides for when you weld it. The welds will try and pull each side inwards. I don't think having the hardtop bolted on will be strong enough by itself, although it may be.
For the rest I would say stitch welding it would be more than enough. a 1" weld and a 2" gap then another 1" weld etc...after its welded up use a good quality seam sealer for the rest.

Riz, measure the over all width of the tailgate. Then add a bit so there is a small 'body gap' between the gate and the sides.
65" or so seems to come to mind...I'd measure mine but its so far out it wouldn't be accurate. My box sides at the top are 1" wider apart than the bottom width of the tailgate. Subsequently my tailgate does not open anymore. I had to use a 2 ton chain come-a-long to get it to close and latch.
This is all due to the accident I had in the spring...

<font color=purple> Thanks ! I love her ............ if it doesn't sell before winter, I'll just do the next thing on the list to it ! I'm thinking of replacing the whole front suspension from Harmon's ....... It will ride a lot better than it does already if I do. Some of the bushings are old and cracked so doing that would be a big improvement ........... I'll just have to heat the garage real good first !

I would install the tailgate and line everything up and then bolt it down, then weld the tailpan to the column. I don't know if this was your plan, but this is the way I did it.
