Welding rear shock mounts

I am planning on relocating the rear mounts to a less vulnerable location. Any precautions I should take welding close to the gas tank?

Cover it with something? Maybe some leather or something. I've saw ppl weld directly over the gas tank and spray sparks all over it, but it kinda freaks me out.
