so.. I got my truck running good and all that.. Was driving around today.. And i think the trans broke something inside.. Wont shift out of first. When i get to 25mph. It tries to switch gears. But it feels like the trans or something is binding. Put it in neutral and coast to a stop.... So i think im going to sell the truck for whatever i can get... And hopefully get a reliable car. Just hope i can get a decent amt. From the 1300 i just forked into it...

checked the transmission fluid? What trans is it? Dont sell it dude, we can help ya figure out whats wrong, i know there are a lot of socal guys on here willing to help.

Well, its your decision, but I could not give it up myself until I at least determined what was wrong.
I'm guessing its an auto. Check the fluid, look underneath for anything loose, try running it through the gears manually.

Start it off with the shifter in low, then shift it to 2 and see if it shifts.

Low fluid could cause bad shifts, trash in the valve body or a loose valve body might cause it to try to shift into second without shifting all the way out of low.

Since the valve body on most of them is right under the pan, it would be an easy thing to check.

What trans? My friends 76 with a T350 had the same exact problem, and the vaccum line had rotted out and that always kept it in first and it wouldnt shift out. Replaced it, and its better than new. As everyone else said, there are enough socal people here to make this thing work!

oh also. Stays in first even if i shift manually
I looked back @ your past posts, you mention you have a T350. Vacuum line, this is the first thing to check, its on the passenger side and the hookup line is right next to the transfer case shift linkage. :waytogo:

You could have a bad modulator valve (where the vacuum line attaches at the trans). Is the vacuum line going all the way from the engine to the trans or does it still have the original hard metal line with a short piece of hose at each end? The reason I ask is because sometimes if you run a length the whole way from the engine to the trans it can suck closed and prevent the modulator from getting the vacuum source that it needs in order to upshift.

hard line with rubber at each end

Have you tried taching the engine up to around 3500 or so rpm to see if it will shift? Even if the modulator is bad or not hooked up the trans WILL upshift but way late around that rpm range assuming it's not something else within the trans that's causing the issue.

A stripped governor gear can cause a no upshift condition. The governor is located behind the round steel cover at the drivers side, rear of the trans. Pop the cover off by tapping around the outside edge with a dull, flat blade screwdriver or other device. Grab the governor once the cover is off, twisting it slightly as you remove it, and check the teeth on the plastic gear on the end. If the teeth are bad, install a new gear. Also, be sure the shaft of the governor has not broken away or become loose in the governor body.

X2>--I bet its the govenor gear if all you get is first gear & reverse...my 81 G-10 van was bought for 500 bucks in 1990 because it had a "blown tranny"--all it was ,was the govenor gear had stripped its plastic gear teeth off, looked like an apple core!..
The guy I bougyt it from was pissed when he heard it was a 20 minute ,five dollar fix,I just got another govenor from a junkyard tranny in their core pile!..:D

but would that gov. Gear make the tranny clunk real hard. And and feel like the gears are fighting eachother

I've read through this and I don't understand why you just argue with everyone's suggestions! It doesn't sound like you want to get it fixed......I would do the things suggested and check it through. Most blown transmissions I've been a part of had fluid leaking all over the place, not always the case, but when they come apart they aren't pretty!!

Just my .02 worth though.........:dunno:

X2 and if you just want to sell it get it fixed anyway for cheap so the buyer won't automatic (ok pun intended) want to deduct 11 or 12 hundred off your price.
