Well, some unfortunate news...(garage)

Generally, romex is designed to be run in walls and PROTECTED. Insulation ratings and material are designed for each application. There are many environmental conditions to consider when choosing the right wire. Romex has no UV protection and a very soft jacket. Even the 'extension cords' that places like Home Depot sells are pretty close to a joke but at least they have a UV rated jacket that is pretty durable against light scrapes and bruises.

Also keep in mind that flexible cords and cables are designed for temporary use. Temporary applications are generally considered to be anything that is required for less than 90 days (On a side note, this means that all you freaks that leave your Christmas lights up all year are violating the code). If you have a relatively fixed piece of equipment like a welder, compressor, etc, it should be hardwired or plugged into a properly wired nearby outlet.

The single phase that we all have in our houses usually starts out at 3-phase anyway and each run is off just one of those three phases. You can easily get single-phase power off a 3-phase circuit. The voltage just has to be what you need or you will need a transformer.

True, but they don't always run the 3rd line down residential areas. Correct me if I'm wrong but if your power polls only have 2 lines then all you can get is 220 single phase. I recall being told the large farms require 3 phase and the power companys will run it to them for their dryers. If you are lucky enough to be in the path of those lines then you can get hooked up for 3 phase. I have heard many talk of wanting 3 phase to run Bridgeport mills bought from industrial auctions.

You must be pshycic TravisO !!

How did you know my Xmas lights are still on the garage?? :eek1: :what: :ignore: :rotfl: ...mine stay up all year!

I know the Romex wire isnt a permanent solution, and I dont like have to use the welder that way,but for now thats all I can do,or use the clothes dryer outlet,or go without..I'd be lost without my welder, even though I dont use it every day,its still a Godsend when I do need it..would be much nicer if I could crank it up to full amperage without tripping the breaker all the time though..but 75-100 amps gets me buy on most repairs..
