I went back to the junkyard on Friday to find a matching 14 bolt FF and a 8 lug front to replace my junk axles. I pulled the cover off one of the two FF's in the yard and found a detroit locker. That's the good part, the bad is it has 3:73's. The only 8 lug front has 4:10's. I have a 3:73 geared front on a 1/2 ton '79 burby (six lugs) that I was thinking of parting out. Here are the questions:

1:What do I need to pull off of the 3/4 ton front to make my half ton front an 8 lug? The 3/4 ton front is in an early 80's truck so it is a 10 bolt.
2:What is the carrier brake on a 14 bolt? (If I ever get a dana 60 front I will need lower gears to go with the huge tires that naturally come along with it)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For the front end swap on (2) 10 bolts, you just need to swap the rotors, backing plates and calipers(some say the calipers are the same, but I am not 100% sure)..

And On the carrier break, i bleieve it is 3.73 is the break. Anything higher needs a new carrier. Check with Detroit though, if you moved up a carrier, you may be able to retain the same Detroit.

Just a thought, but you can always pull out the Detroit and sell it to me. LOL.

I just did the 6 to 8-lug swap on a 10-bolt. The spindles and bearings, and the brake calipers were all the same. You will need the backing plates and the hub/rotor assemblies. The locking hubs will also interchange assuming both have the internal style (the smaller looking ones....).

For the Detroit, I believe they only make one size for all 14 bolt FF's, so you should be able to use it nobody which carrier/gears you go to.

Another option is if the other 14 bolt has 4.10 gears, try to buy the Detroit or whole carrier out of the 3.73 geared one and swapped them around.

The 14B break is 4.10. I have 4.10 gears and if i want to go 4.56, I need a new carrier. Although you can put in thick gears and eliminate the need for the carrier swap.

Thanks for all of the info everyone. By the way, I never pulled the cover off of the other 14 bolt FF so I have no idea what it has in it. The truck itself looks pretty beat so I don't want to screw around with it. One other question. This junkyard has about 6 ford vans with dana 60 full floaters, has anyone used one of these in a chevy?

In the tech section Waxer just did a good write up on converting a 6 lug to 8 lug. Not to hard and if you got the 3.73 front then you got a bargin unless your planning on going big.
Now a Detroit for a 4 installs like a lockright and I don't think the carrier break matters so you could pull the detroit and throw it into the axle with the gears you want if it is open.
The D60 is a good axle and a good find. Not qute as strong as the 14. The 14 is more inline with a D70. But still a plenty strong axle with a bit better ground clearence. Just need to weld on the correct shock brackets and get the spring purch width right. If you weld or know somebody that does it's only a couple hours work to make it fit.
