i went lookin for 97-99 vortecs and they had several, 1 in paticular, it had all its sensors, wireing harness, and the ecm, still all attatched to the motor, what wires would i need to run to the computer to keep it efi, i know it has to be more than a 12v and switched 12v....what else does it need since everything is still attached to the sending units on the motor, it would be nice if o2 in exhaust and 12v was all it needed,

Gotta ask why you want Vortec?

IMO they are a problematic system...that's a lot of complexity for not a lot of gain.

If pulling any system, you get absolutely everything you can that is attached to it, and sort out what you won't use once you get it home, with a factory wiring manual.

I'd recommend TBI or TPI over Vortec.

a stand alone, or reworked harness would be the easiest route,

cant see that system being worth the conversion headache either otherwise

What's a fair pricing on a vortec 350 motor? Something with 100k miles or so and complete. I'd like to put one in my 96 sonoma after i do the SAS. It has a vortec 4.3 now so i'm hoping it will be a easy conversion.

If you could get it 100% complete, I would say 600.00 would be fair, 400 or less to me would be deal:D

Find a guy in the pacific region named Chickenrammit. He put a vortec 350 in his truck and did some custom, albeit simple wiring to make it work.

depending on the milage anywhere from $500-$1000....i usually pull all the electronics & intake off of them and put a gmpp vortec carb intake & a regular hei on them and put sending units in the engine for the gauges i have and comp magnum roller rockers and have a good reliable engine for $800-$1000...i saw them do this in 1 of my hotrod rags w/ a 99 denali engine and it cranked out right at 400 hp....try and build 1 that will be as reliable and as strong for a grand. i was just curious about leavin the efi on it.

Am I the only one driving a 99 Vortec daily with no problems besides my drivers window regulator

My dad has a '99 1500 Suburban he bought new, ~110K now, have replaced the passenger side exhaust donut twice and replaced the trans just after 100K (even changed the fluid/filter three times in that 100K :(). He did tow a pop-up camper with it in OD quite a bit which is bad for the trans.

Absolutely no other problems, its been a really good truck :thumb:

The poppet valves/spiders seem to be relatively problem prone. It would seem to be an overly complex system...if I'm not mistaken, the system died with the 350?

As "young" as the Vortec stuff is, IMO from this site, you hear just as many problems with that setup as you do TBI or TPI, which is older by a fair amount in most cases.

Vortec block is good for the roller cam setup, other than that, no advantage over any other 1st gen SBC I can think of. The heads can be mounted to any other 1st gen, so the Vortec performance gains are mainly made from things OTHER than the induction system.

99's were good so I hear. I drove a 96 Tahoe vortec 350, what a pos, everything and anything broke on that vehicle even replacement motors and trannies and the Tahoe never made it to 180k. My parents suburban, 88 i believe, still runs on the stock tbi motor and 400 trans w/ 267k on it.

The late years of the vortec went to 8 individual injectors instead of the poppet valves. They work very well and can be retrofitted to the older ones.
