That does suck man...I hate finding things like that on a used part,had it happen before.....hope you didn't pay much for it...
My guess is the truck it came out of was a city plow,and the spider gear pin got chucked out of the case while straining against a lot of heavy wet snow,seen more than one do it around here,and get welded back together and put back in service..
..(why they bother too fudge it that way when a local boneyard probably has a whole used axle cheaper I cant say,the DPW seems to repair things that broke than just replace the whole unit--I had a friend who knows a mechanic there,he claims they spent
800 bucks rebuilding a transfer case they could get used for maybe 300 or less...must be because the taxpayers are paying for it,and looking busy fixing something for a week in the garage makes it look like they are earning their paychecks..)..
