found this on a dana 60 axle I got recently .

all I know is I wont be using this housing anytime soon :eek1::doah:

cover face to drop in housing between the pinion bearings welded up crack . and huge hole just behind cast in plug pad size of 50cent piece.

That does suck man...I hate finding things like that on a used part, had it happen before...:doah:..hope you didn't pay much for it...

My guess is the truck it came out of was a city plow, and the spider gear pin got chucked out of the case while straining against a lot of heavy wet snow, seen more than one do it around here, and get welded back together and put back in service..

..(why they bother too fudge it that way when a local boneyard probably has a whole used axle cheaper I cant say,the DPW seems to repair things that broke than just replace the whole unit--I had a friend who knows a mechanic there,he claims they spent
800 bucks rebuilding a transfer case they could get used for maybe 300 or less...must be because the taxpayers are paying for it,and looking busy fixing something for a week in the garage makes it look like they are earning their paychecks..:dunno:)..

even like this I still make money on what I paid for all 3 axles in the deal . :thumb:

and yes big waste of time to repair like that and still not have a sound case that's square .
