what are the advantages of buying a used car

What have you come up with on your own? I'm not implying that you have not, but by college, you should develop your critical thinking and debate skills to formulate your topic. This is a fairly narrow topic, so I can not imagine the paper needs to be too long.
What do you see as advantages of used over new and vice versa?

Back in my day we didn't have the Internet. We had B&B (books and bullsh!t).

Now...where's my cane?

Well as to what I mentioned earlier...

Went to the dealer today. At first they wanted $22k for the car I want. Hatchback, auto, white, and the turbo model (which after searching is a hard as hell combo to find). They told me they would give me $500 for my car and that was about as far as it got.

I mentioned used and they all got upset (of course they want to make some money on it) and kept trying to force new deals down my throat. "oh you get the fancy radio and leather seats etc etc..."

Well just about when I was ready to walk out the guy went in the finance room and came back out. It went to $1000 for my car (figured that's all ill get out of it anyways) a $1500 rebate, gm pricing and some other junk. Takiing the car I want exacty, (which I could not find in a used model anywhere) from $22k to a bit over $17k.

Now the same used model ones were in the $14-15k price range with 15-30k on them. IMO id rather buy what they offered me for a brand new one, than one that someone most likely hot rodded on a lease or something for 15 to 30k miles....

So next week ill own a brand new turbo charged car for under $200 a month and say :flipoff7: you guys :D

And when I get my 18" black wheels it will look like...

Also im betting of my $200 a month payment, half of that will be paid in just fuel savings from my current car....

$200/month doesn't payoff a $17,000 loan.... Did you finance it for 10 years? :haha:

What details are you leaving out of your little story?

Over $5000 down. :waytogo:

Been saving all year. It's money I've been putting aside just so I could put a lot down and have a payment I can deal with.

Gas savings and not having to repair mine alone will pay for half my monthly payment.

End of the month. They want to make a deal, plain and simple. Always better to make a deal at the end of the month.

End of the month. They want to make a deal, plain and simple. Always better to make a deal at the end of the month.

Especially at the end of the day in the dark when your trade in looks extra clean

Never trade in! Always tell them you are keeping it or giving it to... always get the best deal first. Then say OK if I can get what my car is worth on trade?

Make a good deal and then walk away! I'll think about it and come see you tomorrow. That will spark another better deal before you leave.

You'll probably get a call tomorrow from them anyway and let them know it's just not a good deal, what can you do to make this reasonable? The price is still way beyond high book? Dealer x has one a few thousand below yours with less miles?

One thing the hate to hear is "I have all the time in the world to look for a good deal!"

After a few days you'll get bottom dollar, then see what they give you on trade? Probably nothing at that point. But your still better off! You'll never get what your trade is worth... unless they have raised price on what your buying.

It's all a big game for them to make big profit. If you can't play hard ball till end of month, when you will get bottom dollar seal, then don't play! Your just going to get screwed.

Better yet watch several YouTube Auto Sales training videos so you know how the game works.

Definitely a good call mark.

At first they said it was worth $500 max after appraisal. Then when I started talking finding a car elsewhere, they hit me with a ton discounts lol, $1000 for mine, $1500 rebate, gm pricing. And it knocked the price down a lot.

But $1000 is all I figured I could get for mine anyways. So now I don't have to glue the rear view mirror back on to the windshield, or wash it, or clean it, or deal with Craigslist or sellers. I like that :haha:

If you live in a lemon law state trading in can save big headaches.

Yeah, they're not really giving you anything for your old car. Just making it sound like they are. Either one of the techs or clean up kids or some sort of employee will buy it for a $50-200 (depends on the dealer and how they do things) internal processing fee, or they just call up a local scrap yard to come pick it up. It would cost them more than what they own it for to clean it and ship it to auction. I used to buy a lot of cheap cars from work like this and fix 'em up and flip 'em. New owners came in and they send EVERYTHING to auction regardless if they loose money on it or whatever. So, there went my additional income.

I'll stop rambling now. :waytogo:

Just think, in 35 years that coulda been worth 350K....true story!

In 35 years you could be dead.

Hopefully this isn't the last 5k Adam makes

Down payments are a good thing if you don't qualify for 0%

My loan is 0%, so I get to make money on my money for the next 5 years while I pay off the beetle. I know saving an easy $100 in fuel monthly is nice.

You can also negotiate for service. Some dealerships will throw in oil changes, detailing, waxing, tire rotation etc.

Oh well. I make more everyday. I live at home still and my mom has health issues that mean I'm not gonna be moving out anytime soon. Might as well buy something I like now while I don't have big payments and responsibilities.

Besides id just spend it all on the blazer anyways :haha:

With a $1000 beater the dealer does not want it. Usually a dealer will give you a $1K but it's added on top of the car your buying price. So for them it's a wash, for you it's a loss.

The only time a trade is worth it is if you have no money down. Your still giving car away. But on paper it was $2500 down payment...

Time to be a dick I guess...

You worked real hard for that $5K, you're gonna give them your old car whether you know it or not, you're gonna finance the rest (~$12K) for approx 5 years?

...and you're doing this for GM's latest sh1tbox loss leader? I don't care how much lipstick and bullsh1t they put on it, it's the automotive equivalent to a Bic lighter. Worth fuvk all, and disposable. Remember the "Turbo Sprint"? The Sonic is just a newer version of the same pile of crap.

If you're gonna spend that kind of money, get something worthwhile...

Oh well.

Papers signed, I'll have a new car at 6pm or so tomorrow whether you guys like it or not. I'll be happy and that's all I really give a crap about.

If it's a bad deal, at least I'm young and don't have any other responsibilities to deal with and I'll learn from it for my next purchase. Which will be after roughly 6 years of worry free no more: starters/water pumps/brake line/ blower motor etc changing while laying in the snow in negative temperature weather.

So hate all you like, won't change my mind a bit :waytogo:

Sorry to the OP, didn't mean for this thread to turn into "Adam wants a new car so let's all bitch at him"

Just trying to save you some regret...not 'hating'.

May have some regret. Oh well such is life.

A lot of guys here have $10,$20,$30+ Thousand dollars into their blazers that are worth 5-10k for the higher ones? And we say they aren't an investment but a hobby etc... But in reality what's the difference... I'm not buying my car as an investment. I don't care if it's worth $6000 in 6 years... I want a daily driver, not something to buy and sell for more etc. I'm mother fockin sick of laying in the snow fixing my junk, and I want to get in a car every morning and know I can make it to work.

My k5 has I bet over $13k into it (and will have plenty more) and it's maybe worth 4k? :dunno:

I don't see the big deal or difference .... :dunno:
