mine's a mechanical speedo. i got in the truck the other day and the speedo just didn't work. doesn't even bounce. i checked the connection at the t-case and i checked the connection at the gauge. only odd thing about this speedo is that it's got a gear-correction fitting on the t-case. could that go bad? i didn't pull it off and plug the speedo directly into the t-case to check.

what else should i look at?

Replace the cable. Its very, very easy and fairly cheap. I've replaced quite a few and they were always averaging $15.

that's kinda what i figured - that the cable broke inside the housing. bummer. oh well.

One thing that happened to me was that when I put in my doubler, I needed a longer cable. I bought a longer one and installed it but it did not work at all. I fiddled with it a bunch and after pulling my hair out, I found out that what I had done was to push it in too far on the back of the speedo. The older type have a clip and they just push onto the small column that protrudes from the back of the speedo. I pulled it out slightly, and that fixed it completely. A small minor adjustment but it made all the difference.

cool. i'll try that. i've been pushing on it to make sure it's seated properly, so perhaps i've over done it. if that doesn't work, i'll get another one. $20 at napa, we'll see what they want for a used one at the wrecking yard down the road.

For a cheap item, that is such a wear/lubrication battle all the time, why would you waste your time with a used one? Certain things are better purchased new, and done right the first time.

just cause i want to save a couple bucks. if it's $10 or less at the wrecking yard, i may as well. i drive this truck only about 20 miles or so each month, usually, with the exception of a trip every few months. now that it's summer, i'll do more wheeling, so a bit more. anyway, point is, i drive it so rarely that i'm happy to risk a used speedo cable since it's no big deal. 5 minutes under the truck to replace it and i'm done.

What t case is it? I know with my 205, the plastic gear blew out in mine.
