I have seen that before, looked like the exact same set-up. I figgured it was some hokey thing to tighten up loose tie rod ends.

I will pull them off this weekend and run around the neighborhood and see what changes.....Thanks guys

is there springs on both sides? and is both springs stretched somewhat? I could see them to help tracking if you were to flat tow...seeing that when you turn one way or the other the springs would stretch more... just a thought?

or if you truck pulled one way you could stretch one side to help it stay straight, kind of a wrong way to fix a problem...but I've seen some crazy ****

Maybe the previous owner was is the old trampoline business. Let me guess, there's one on the throttle cable and e brake...

You need to take those pictures down. Its actually the top secret, never published, burn before viewing, perfect cure for death wobble.

The two top GM engineers and the few civilians who are permitted to know about it are the only ones who can drive around without having to put washers in the joints or do other extreme things to stop that.

Since yours is on an axle not known for DW, it looks like an early experimental unit.
Plus, although its hard to tell from that picture, it also looks like its missing the resonating quantum bosun cycling unit.
Which would make it a very early model indeed.

I can't see any pictures, but by what I am reading that's a device sold by Hickey Enterprises as a steering dampener. You guys have to realize there was a time when not many four wheel drives were on the road, and fewer used for recreation, and big wide tires were a whole new ball game. Just as we now have companies innovating new devises to enhance 4wd capabilities that we are all familiar with, back then things were just getting started and new ideas were flying. Although we can see that device is of little use it's still a cool piece of vintage off road equipment and probably worth something to someone.

Cool! They're definitely worth a dollar to me.

I'm just sayin',don't toss 'em. There are people who collect Hickey Stuff and other old off road equipment.
Just for kicks, here's an old Hickey ad:
