Though I do not claim to be a motor guru, I believe it is safe to say that these should not be there. ;) :doah:

So, any ideas on what they are, 'fore I tear the whole freakin' thing down? Spark plug provided for size reference. One big chunk, and a bunch of little ones that, while curved, are also tapered in on the end like the tines of a fork.

I presume they were a sleeve or bearing or something in a past life, before whatever bad thing happened, unless somebody stuck a fork into the engine :eek1:

Any pointers on what to go looking for appreciated.

yeah, i think you have a connecting rod getting up close and personal with your crank. dead bearing. i'd use the truck to hold down the driveway until i rebuilt the bottom end or just swapped the engine. my 2 cents.

The one large piece looks a little like part of a rod bearing, but still seems small. They are magnetic, and not piston pieces?

I wish I could help you more, can't think of anything else off the top of my head that looks like that in an engine.

I got a couple of weird pieces in my oil filter that I cut off too...very fine thread, somewhat metallic, brown, somewhat looks similar to hardened JB weld. Nothing in my engine would look like that either lol.

They are ferrous, yes. Are pistons aluminum, or magnetically dead or something?

:doah: Karnak The Invincible sees a motor tear down in my future.

Pistons are aluminum, bearings are steel and brass I think.

Those pieces look like a very dead bearing to me.

i would have to say those are definately a bearing, just saw that a few months ago in my friends 350.

did you hear the engine making any noises at all?

Was the motor knocking? Useually bearing material that comes out is rough and burnt. Motor should have a good knocking noise also. By the shape of them ,it looks like it could almost be valve springs.

I didn't hear this one run 'fore I got it ... long story, but it was allegedly good.

Valve springs, interesting. ::shrug:: I also found a visibly bent pushrod, so I've got my work cut out for me :)

I was thinking valve spring dampers - the coils made of flat material that they put inside the main spring. If it is a bearing I would guess that it may be a cam bearing walking out and getting shredded, or the thrust bearing is getting torn up. In any case it is bad and you need to take a peek inside :eek1:

the big piece looks like a bearing, my bearings where steel liner with cooper and babit, when I torched my motor and had 2 bearing showing only steel liners.

I'm in class right now and I showed my teacher the picture...he said the same exact thing by just looking at the pic...he said that he thinks its a cam bearing walking out and getting chewed up...also look at how uniform the pieces are...
