I'd like to remove my OEM smog pump, but Im not sure what "the rest of everything"........is......Or how removal will effect what...etc etc...

So, what is the purpose of each circled component in the following pics, and what effect will removal have on engine idle, or any other aspect of engine performance ?

Thanks for looking, and thanks for any helpful responses :waytogo:

Pic 1 is Evap. No, you don't want to remove it. That is how your gas tank is vented and is what keeps your fuel tank from building pressure in it.

3 I would guess is the AIR divert valve, 2 no clue.

Anything to do with AIR is fairly easy to figure out...if it ties into the tubes screwed into the exhaust manifolds, it's AIR.

Be careful, you can end up making the engine run worse than it does monkeying with this stuff.

2 and 3 as well as the small circle in pic one are all AIR related and if you remove one you remove all, the big one in pic 1 you don't want to touch.
Some have removed it but there is no advantage to power or anything except you will start smelling gas or blow up your tank from pressure if you plug those hoses.

#1 is a charcoal canister. You can remove it, my truck never had one. I do suggest keeping the vent line and putting a mini filter on it so as to not get bad stuff into the tank.

Exactly...

This is why I pictured all of them and asked as one. There is an air hose from the pump to the "diverter" (Pic3) which fans out and hits the "cap" (Pic2) and then ventures down to the "charcoal canister" (Pic1), in an artery fashion (3/8 or better in size).

I wasn't sure if it was vent lines (or not) because by having connection to the pump, it would seem to be a vaccumed vent system, and not natural like the tiny tube on top of a 700R4 etc.

Hmm :doah:

Thanks for the replies !

OK - I have further answers...

The canister in the pic below is an "emission vapor canister" - It will remain where it is, with a touch of hose re-routing and such for cosmetic purposes. It will remain unaltered otherwise.

The component in the pic below is an "air management diverter valve". It will remain as well, untouched, with the exception of new hose and routing.

This component in the pic below is, according to Chilton, an "air management diverter valve". I guess I can buy off on that - It does what the name describes. One hose to the OEM air filter housing, one to each OEM exhaust mainfold - Thats it.

So, now there's a new question out of all the answers provided thus far. In the final picture, what is the purpose of the electrical connector ?

For a bit of reasoning to all my 101 questions, I am about to install new headers, and will obviously lose the OEM exhaust manifold tubes. As you can see in picture #2, I have already replaced the OEM air filter housing. This renders the diverter in picture #3 pointless IMO. Now, I simply wish to know how the connector in picture #3 plays into all of this.

As far as I discovered thus far - Removal of the pump and the diverter in question (this time) wont effect anything especially with headers coming into the equation.

Any further information from the board would be appreciated, any additional thoughts are also more than welcome.

Thanks for reading and the responses

Whatever you take off, bag and keep. You may need it in the future if rules change or you sell the truck.

MOST definitely !!

I have everything to include the air breather housing. If absolutely necessary, I will be able to revert the entire engine bay back to OEM. I even still have my original steering wheel in case the state inspector chooses to say my Grant is too small a diameter.

Oh yeah I hear what your speakin.....
