What axle is this?

back then did they use 12b's in 3/4 tons or is it another series of axles before the 14ff/12b/10b/d44 etc.?

that's the Eaton, or H052/72 axle, that the 14 bolt replaced. it's talked about every once in a while on here.

was it as strong? Looks like it would have better ground clearance at least...

like I said...it's been covered. shafts are pretty much the same size, but 17 spline instead of 30. i'd say its equal strengthwise.
