if you have a choice for a full synthetic oil for your brand new engine you broke in for 500 miles with break in oil what brand of everyday off the shelf oil would you run ?

engine is around 300hp 5.7L with 5w-30 spec oil and factory roller cam .

i can get the 3 name brands i listed in the poll and if you have a different one please add it in your reply below .

keep in mind this is a easy to get oil for everyday use of changing / topping off if need be / and NOT crazy price point .

This is a very subjective question. I’d need to see a comparison chart of tests performed on each one to decide. Without it you’re basing your decision on brand loyalty, advertising, and word of mouth. That being said, I would think that any one of those will be far better than dino oil. Don’t forget to use a good quality filter too.
 
I would be all for synthetic oil in a new modern BMW,Audi, etc. But in a 5.7 350 based on the old small block design I don’t see any benefits. Those motors were designed for regular oil. Lots of folks will put in synthetic and go like 10,000 miles between changes. Even at 5-7000 mi the synthetic will be all black in color. I’ve also heard some discussion about the synthetic oils being to thin. I know this is a very heavily debated topic, just my opinion here.
 
I use synthetic in my daily driver but it requires it. VW turbo Jetta. It will turn dino oil to charcoal and plug every thing up. Anyways, I use M1 as it is easy to find and cheap. I get it from a regional chain called Bi-Mart. It is about 24 bucks for a 5 liter jug. Cheap. I drive 150 miles a day of which 140 is 70 MPH freeway miles. I change it every 10k miles. The car now has 200k miles on it and at the end of a 10k run I can't even tell it has used any oil. Same place on the stick as it was when I filled it. People say the turbos on the 1.8 liters only last about 100k. This one has 200k. I also run synthetic in my Gen VI 454. It uses a little but not much. No clue how many miles, I just change it twice a year.

I like synthetic because there almost no viscosity breakdown with heat, and it doesn’t become acidic and attack the bearings.
 
I had a first GEN probe that I built a 2.0 turbo motor for. At first I was running Valvoline 20 W 50 and in the summer the oil would get so hot my oil pressure would drop to almost 0. I switched to Amsoil and it retained 20 psi at idle hot. After that I was sold. I have ran it in everything I own since. Except for the allison in my dually. I run Transynd in it. As far as I know it’s the only tes-295 spec oil.
 
In both of my trucks all fluids are Amsoil. My parents are a dealer for them so I get it at dealer cost. It's about a 100 bucks for a 12 pack of quarts of 15w40 diesel oil. I change it once a year in the engine on my dodge, about 15k average, and every other year on the trans, about 30k average. Been doing that 13 years and 190,000 miles. I wouldn't hesitate to run synthetic oil in my next vehicle.


Royal purple and mobile one are good products also. I just happen to get a better price for amsoil.

Amsoil is now tes-295.
 
I've been using amsoil as of lately, with the dealer discount I'm paying a little more than half price what you'd pay off the shelf. My friends and I pool together to get free shipping well and it's on my porch in a couple days. Hard to lose.

I've run Mobil 1 synthetic in my 06 silverado for over 100k miles now. I just go by the computer as far as changing it. It will use about a quart between oil changes. I'm guessing it's the pcv valve issue, but I don't care enough to change the valve cover. Truck has 235K or so on it now.

He engine will consume a bit more full synthetic. My 02 did but maybe not quite a qt
 
I run Amsoil in everything. I have nothing against any of the others, they are probably just as good. I doubt that any of them are all that much better than any other full synthetic.
Some of the test results I read do show some differences between different brands but you have wonder about both the accuracy of the tests and their relationship to real world use.
As I have mentioned in other threads, I have personally witnessed how Amsoil reduces friction over conventional oil in an NP205. That sold me on the value of synthetic oil.

Which ever synthetic I would use, I would take care to use the best oil filter I could find. While synthetic might not break down as quickly as conventional, it does get dirty at about the same rate, and you need the filter to catch the extra dirt an extended drain interval creates.
If I were planning on trading a car somewhere before 150K, I would use conventional oil and filters unless the manual called for synthetic. But if I am planning on keeping it for 10 years of more like I usually do, then its Amsoil and Wix XT filters.
And, if the car uses some of those tiny filters that many are going to, then I would either consider changing the filter about halfway through, and topping off the pan, or installing a remote larger filter. Maybe even a bypass system.

But also remember these motors were designed back when all the oils had all the good stuff like zinc to help with wear. All that has been pulled out to help with emissions equipment.
 
I think the key when running regular Dino oil is to change it often, every 3k mi. Even if running synthetic oil I still wouldn’t go 10k mi. between changes. The oil would be very dirty and black in color even if it didn’t break down yet. I’ve had many GM vehicles that went 250k, even 350k+mi. while running regular Dino oil. Changing it often is key, no matter what oil you use. To the original question, I would choose M1.
 
I use 5w40 syn Valvoline in pretty much everything anymore, and the diesel rated 5w40 Valvoline in the 6.5.

The big advantage for me is easy starts when it gets really cold......cold being 10 deg or less.
