What can it be?

Hi! Can somebody tell me what is the purpouse of this pieces, mounted under the axles, mark with red in pictures? Pictures are from Chevrolet & GMC Pick-ups 1967 thru 1987 / 2WD & 4WD Automotive Repair Manual by Haynes.

That looks like an axle truss, used to be available from aftermarket suppliers like Con-Ferr, and was bolted to the axle with u-bolts. Purpose was to prevent possible bending of the axletubes upwards under high stress.
