i have a d60 with 6" springs and i needed no shims. there are a lot of variables, so i called tom woods custom driveshafts, they were of great assistance to me reguarding this issue.
Technically you shouldn't run shims on the front unless you use longer shackles because that will change your caster.
It might help your driveshaft angles but you will be working pretty hard keeping the truck on the road.
That is a loaded question. Every truck is different, too many variables. You need to figure out what your caster angle is and adjust with shims until you are within spec. Don't be worried about drive shaft angle on a front shaft that will only see low speed driving while wheeling. Sure you could adjust it so that you have a good angle on the front shaft but if the caster angle is out of spec you'll have fun trying to steer the truck.
