I got my truck running (I had a post about misfire) end up putting new cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Took it for a test drive and now ive got some vibration thru the wheel and a horrible sound coming from rear end.

It sounds very "ratchety" and very "metalic" sounding, It is pretty loud and seems to be coming from drivers side rear wheel. Its really bad upon acceleration, It also only seems to be under load. I tried going 10mph an putting it in neutral but didnt seem to hear it.

HELP!!!!!!!!

Is time to jack the truck up, put all four corners on stands, and spin the wheels by hand ... maybe even run the truck while it's up in the air.

If it's only on a rear corner, I'm inclined to think brakes, or maybe the bearing(s) on that corner. If you've got drums, though, I'd pull the drum off, see how tight it is and whether there's crud on the shoes.

Or if you've got a 10b with a Gov-loc, maybe one side is sticking and it's about to explode? :dunno: I only had one for a while and never whanged on it.

Oh sorry. shouldve known better than to leave info out. LoL.

Its a 10b with Strange chromoly axles and loc rite locker. The rest is stock.

If its the loc rite that went bad, im dumping it and going back to spider gears. I dont do enuff off roading for it to make a difference right now.

The only thing I did was get under the truck and check the Ujoints. Not sure exactly how. I just tried turning the driveshaft with it in park, there was no play. so dunno.

You need to check u-joints with the wheels chocked and the trans in neutral, otherwise there will be pressure on the joints and you won't be able to feel any looseness.

If it really sounds as bad as you describe it, its probably a broken locker or ring and pinion.

the truck essentially FUNCTIONS just fine. Jus makes aweful noise. If the ring and pinion broke wouldnt i be dead in the water?

Nope, if some teeth break they will often skip along the non-broken ones.

The locker is probably more likely than the ring and pinion. If your u-joints are fine, you'll have to pull the cover to inspect the wheel bearings, brakes, locker and ring and pinion. You'll find your problem in one of those.

Welp took truck to 4x4 shop, He drove it a whole 100yards and told me the verdict.

U JOINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. He said they are done for. He also said they are the ORGINAL, as in 1984 org. w/ 128k on them. :eek1:. Im guessing the truck wasnt wheeled that much. lol. He said they are the org. cuz of the plastic sleeve that the factory used and its still there. He said its alot of fun replacing those, as you have to heat up the plastic and it usually shots all over the place. lol. oh well.

I dont feel to bad now, this is what I would consider a mild repair on a wear out item.

So there you go. The locker is still good and intact.

I recently had the pleasure of trying to remove original u-joints. I scratched my head for a while and then broke out the torch. Yes the melted platic shoots out all over the place. :doah:

I told you to check those:laugh:

Well, I wouldnt have known a bad one from a good one. I knew the 4x4 shop wouldnt screw me around. It was quick to diagnose, they will fix it tomorrow. So all is well. Im glad I didnt destroy the axle guts.
