I thought I bought a nice used factory 1972 12 bolt gov bomb (Just to buy me some time before the 14 bolt swap) but it does not look like the pictures I have seen.

yes sir, thats a posi-trac unit, i have been lookin for one of those & all i find are gov-bombs..nice find
ya those posi units were back in the early 70's back stuff.
Thats the better version of a posi for the 12 bolt.
I had the gov-bomb in an '81 K10 with the 12 bolt and it blew up. Wasn't even hotrodding or anything. Just driving along downtown merrily at 10 mph and boom! Rear locked up and tires skidded the truck to a stop. Turns out the pinion nut fell off causing everything to blow up instantaneously.
Regardless, you've got the better version of a posi trac.

SWEET Thanks guys. Makes it even sweeter now . I traded my ole stock roll bar and a busted up old blue center console for it. and now I've got 2 xtra axles in case I break one with the posi.

Posi-trac is a Rambler term. Just sayin'. Regardless those are good units if you take them apart and clean them up good. Make sure the gear lube you use has Limited Slip additive in it, or get some from your local GM dealer.
I've got one in my 2wd s10 extreme, love my eaton 
Can you replace the springs with heavier ones? I think I heard that before. You can make it more aggressive, just the thing for bigger tires and offroad.

Yes you can but its a pain in the arse to add the heavy springs, in a light car its Damn near like a spool
it took about 3 years of wear for it to finally one legger around a corner while @ WOT.
