I have a 79 jimmy with 350/465/205 and i just finished replacing the clutch, rear main seal, oil pan gasket, and front output shaft seal on the transfer case. I just added the oil and started it up and THERE WAS NO OIL PRESSURE!! I obviously had to take the oil pump off to do the rear main, but its only one bolt to take it off! How could i mess this up? Can anybody tell me what i managed to screw up? Did something important fall out that i didnt notice?

When you pulled the oil pump there should have been a driveshaft attached to the pump with a plastic sleeve. Sometimes the sleeve breaks and you might have dropped the driveshaft. That shaft connects between the oil pump and the distributor. The distributor is driven by the cam which in turn drives this shaft.

How long did it run? Im betting it just didnt build pressure immediatley. This can happen when you drop the pump and dont prime the motor.

I never took the shaft off the pump. I just undid the bolt, slid the pump out with the shaft and set it on the drain pan. Then i re installed it the same way, slid the shaft in the hole and put the bolt in. Do i HAVE to take the distributor out to prime it? I just turned the motor over for a while before i actually started it. Is that the problem?

The first time i started it, it ran about 20 sec, waiting for the pressure gauge to go up but it never did. Then i started it again a lil later for about the same amount of time and it never went up. And i could hear what i believe to be the lifters ratteling.

You need to make sure that the shaft went into the distributor correctly. Are you sure that she shaft is still attached properly?

Im a retard. I went back and pulled the pan, and when i went to loosen the oil pump bolt... it already was. Apparently someone (me) didnt tighten the oil pump bolt. I went ahead and put a new pump in anyways because i had $13 to blow and the cold pressure went up to about 55 at idle when it used to be 40. So everything worked out, but lets not tell anybody about the loose bolt.

I mean this in the nicest way, but, lesson learned!

I've been turning wrenches for better then 20 years, half of those professionally. It's still the basics that get me everytime...

A loose oil pump bolt would definately cause a problem. Glad you got it figured out and fixed. Just remember, this is something that you won't EVER forget and so it only increases your knowledge bank. You can read all the books in the world but nothing beats hands on experience and teaches you something you won't forget.
