I had a 14 bolt in my old 75 K5 which was gov-locked, from what I remember your couldn't see inside the carrier, on this new truck you can see spiders and what looks like clutches. Is this a swapped in lockright or something? Sometimes both tires will spin, some times only one, which made me think it was a gov-lok but it doesn't look like my old one..

My spiders are wore out and I want to replace it, hopefully with a detroit rather than the expensive arb.
Any thoughts?
sorry my camera was pretty much dead and didn't want to take pictures.

Thats what my assumption has always been too...4 holes and its Open, 3 and its a gov-bomb. never seen one where you can see the spiders.

You know I never actually looked at the hubs, it is a semi-floater. I didn't know they came in a 8 lug. Its an 85 K20, is this common? I assumed they all came with FF and never looked at the hubs, that sucks. :doah:

Yep, SF 14 bolts are pretty common in 3/4 tons.

The brake thing is a proportioning valve that changes rear brake percentage based on rear end saggage (load in truck).

Does anyone know if you can get a detroit locker for the semi floater w/gov lok?

hmm, might be the way to go for now, unless I find an open FF. I'm only going to run 35s so strength shouldn't be a problem and the extra clearance will be nice.

Im about to buy a truck with what I thought is 14 ff anyone know an easy way to tell the difference?

Look at the hubs on the rear end. If there is a piece sticking through the middle of the wheel with 8 bolts on it its a FF. If nothing is sticking out and there are no bolts, its a SF.

If it has center caps on the rear and you cant see if there are the bolt on the end of the axle just look at the pinion. It is is bolted in with 6 bolt then it is a 14BFF if there are no bolt then it is a semi float

I'd run it with a new diff like you plan. 14 sf is still a good axle.

With the full floaters its 4 pins or holes and its open and 3 its gov lok or something right? I found a guy local that has a couple. It'll be cheaper to just get the FF now has the difference in the detroits is probably what the diffs going to cost.
Also is it the same size U-joint for my 8lug SF & a FF?

I just bought a 14bsf with a detroit locker in it. the guy told me he spent 600 on just the locker for it. i got it for 350 that and a front 10 blot.
