well, i found this and am thinking about picking it up...i know, it's a jeep...but i need smething to ride 3 or 4 people around with a/c....seems like a good deal to me...im gonna offer him 2k ...this is from a local post:

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4 Lifted - $2500obo - MOTIVATED!! I need to sell ASAP, need the money to put as a deposit on a place by the end
of the month cause my lease is up.

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4X4
138,000 Miles
Auto
I-6 4.0 High output
Cold A/C
Power Windows and Locks
Cruise Control
Driver Airbag
White with Grey cloth interior
Class 3 hitch
Rusty's 4-1/2 Suspension lift w/ NEW Pro-Comp ES3000 Shocks all around
33" BF All-Terrians

Interior is really clean. I have Mossy Oak seat covers on the front,
washed the back seats recently so they look like new.

Stuff that's been replaced recently...
Battery
Alternator
Water pump
Thermostat
Radiator and Hoses
Front Brakes
Rear brakes COMPLETELY OVER HAULED.
Air Filter
Oil
Dif. Fluid
Brand new steering box.

Needs...
Front drive side U-Joint (I would do it myself, but I really don't know how)
Other than that it there is nothing wrong w/ it.

Great daily driver or mud truck. Driven it to Miami twice, made the trip w/ no problems.

Rust on driver side floor board. Easy to replace, but just letting it be known so there are no surprises.

Radio that is in the picture doesn't come w/ it. But I can put one in once I take mine out.

Paint is shiny with usual scuffs dents and scratches for the year. Rocker panels do need to be
replaced, but you can get two for $90. Doesn't affect driving @ all.

I was pricing Cherokee's here in PHX not that long ago and thats a pretty good deal, except the rust part (we don't have much of that here). If it drives ok, I'd jump on it.

Ask about the gears. Definitely check the health of the auto if the thing has been rolling around on bigger tires with the stock gears for a while. If he hasn't regeared it figure a set of gears in on the price as well.

Check the front unit bearings and u-joints as well.

Oh, and the gas mileage isn't going to be great. You might consider finding a 2wd newer fullsize GM truck or something. I figure if you're going for the mid-upper teens at best you might as well have a larger vehicle.

I wonder what that gets for mileage. I only bring it up because you mentioned using it as a DD. 96-00 XJs do have the better version of the HP 30 front axle (bigger ujoints). Probably has the POS Dana 35 rear axle unless its got the tow package, then D44. The high mileage and rust issues might be a deal breaker for $2500. Sorry if it seems like I'm raining on the parade but it seem like you could do better. There are a lot of those XJs out there. Even the lifted ones. It's a Jeep thing...

Edit: AJM beat me to the mileage issue. Two posts in between while answering the phone.

yeah, it's rare..but it does happen....must have been from up north somewhere....if it checks out, im gonna offer him 1900 for it. he said it runs/drives perfect. as far as the mileage...i need something reliable/able to carry cargo/dogs/people more than anything. my commute to work is literally just over 1mile, so rarely would i need to even fill er up. haha. another big thing is the wear/tear on my 40tsl's is killing me(as far as cost) and tire wear. i dunno. i've heard real good things about xj's for sure.

Ours was a POS...and it averaged a whopping 13-14 mpg mixed driving. :doah:

For that kinda mileage I'd rather drive a stockish FI'd K5.

yeah, keeping things stockish is my problemo...haha..especailly on something like a k5 that is cheap/easy as hell to mod/lift/break. haha.....i dunno...im still keeping my options open. won't go look at it until monday more than likely. thanks for the input ya'll.
