what do you do with all your used oil?

and dump about 10 gallons down it. takes care of them pretty good /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

So does dynamite, and it doesn't contaminate ground water.

No offense to anyone, but I can't believe farmers get away with what they do with regards to waste oil. I have seen many farms over the years that if the epa overseen them they would have major contamination issues. To clarify I'm no city slicker, tree hugger. I live in the country in ag territory, have friends who own farms and worked on them while I was younger. So I have seen first hand what I'm reffering too.

I'll gladly pay a little to have my oil disposed of properly.

Ah, most of us farmers believe....it came from the ground and it can go back into the ground. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I personally don't have much problems with spilled oil but we do have a bankout that leaks a little diesel, I just burn it out of the ground once a year. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif About 25% of our oil I am able to use between the smudge pot and combine chains. The rest I have pumped out by a guy and he takes it...someplace. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif .... /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

up here in alberta i get paid .08 cents a liter for used oil

Absolutely. What a win-win. I'm going to put one in the new shop/garage when I get around to building one...

However in most places around the world the oil is naturally occuring below ground water supplies. If it can contaminate your water it can also affect people miles away.

I just use the old oil from the wifes care in my truck which is selfchanging through a complex metering system(gaskets)and burning system to make sure oil does not stay in the motor to long esspecially at higher rpms /forums/images/graemlins/pimp1.gif

LOL, I have an old 110 Honda 3 wheeler using the same advanced technology! My boy likes to pretend he's James Bond with his smoke screen. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Just wish it didn't involve cleaning the fouled plug every 4 hours of run time...

We're pretty spoiled here in Boise, Idaho. All Boise residents are required to have trash service from BFI, and part of their service is curb-side oil pickup. We just have to put it in any clear jug, write "Used Oil" on it, and set it by the mailbox on trash day. They even leave your jugs if you write "Save Container" on it.

I use washer fluid jugs because they're a good size, clear, and easy to work with and keep sealed. My wife loves to go through a lot of it too... *cringes at the grit scratched windshield...*

I suppose I'm lucky. There are several parts stores and a TSC in my hometown. I save my 5 gallon gear oil bukcets and when I accumulate 5 or 10 gallons, I take it to Autozone, or Advanced, or OReilly's, or TSC, etc. My advice is to make friends with a local mechanic and dump it in his oil recycle barrel. Probably one of the last things you want to do is let it build up until you have 50+ gallons.

[/ QUOTE ] Relax, any idiot knows that oil is much deeper than water. I have heard a few of my fellow ranchers in our neighborhood say that but regardless, it's mainly a joke.

I would but it doesn't really get that cold out here!

Autozone and Checker is where I take mine. I dont understand how they steal your buckets though, dont they just dump it in their oil tank and return the bucket to you?
In fact, I usually just walk to the back of the store and dump my own oil.

Do you mean lube? If you do, YEAH! That graghite stuff john deere recommends you use on the chains is expsensive! All their specialty oils are. Used oil seems to lube up the chains on my JD combines almost as well.

i pour mine into the trunk of my james bond/ inspector gadget mobile. then when im being chased by the bad guys i just say "go go gadget oil slick...." /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Doesn't it seem insane that we need oil so bad, and pay so much for it, and at the same time are giving it away or dumping in the back yard? Thats like saying hey, this golds dirty, I'm throwing it away...better yet, heres $5 to take it off my hands... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Yes,it is a renewable source of energy--I'm waiting for someone to convert used oil into motor fuel--I see only a few reasons why it couldnt be used to run diesel engines.other than the pollutants from lead in the bearings, and other stuff the oil gets contaminated by when used in a gas engine as lubricant.I'm sure the EPA would not want allow it for that reason alone-They probably dont like waste oil heaters much either--but if all the gas and diesel fuel supplies get low enough they will have to relent-Once they see someone driving for practially free on used oil, they will probably REALLY make it illegal to have any,and confiscate it from us!.Kinda like those 100 mpg carburetors they invented in the 60's--the inventor is probably wearing cement overshoes at the bottom of the ocean somewhere. It is truly ironic when you think about all the stuff we waste in this country, when its so expensive and difficult to buy and produce new stuff--a junkyard is another goldmine,I've found a lot more than car parts there--like Junkyard Wars,if I'm building a mini-bike or go-kart,or lawn and garden machines, they always have that elusive sprocket,or pulley you cant seem to buy anywhere--many times people put other stuff in the cars and trucks they are scrapping for more weight-I even found a washing machine that ran pefect in the back of a van--the guy was happy it hauled it away!.There are too many people throwing good stuff away without trying to donate it to those who can use it.And all the stuff we scrap today will be coming back from china to haunt us someday--just pray they dont build missles with it!.
Hey! thats how we can get rid of used oil--shoot it at our enemies in a missle--or a rocket to the moon maybe!--or use my solution to the landfills--fly all our trash, waste oil and other refuse in a helicopter to the nearest active volcano, and drop it in!.Mother Nature will do the rest!. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Well I know they can recycle oil....the fundamental elements of the oil do not change by running it in an engine. At this point I am guessing it is still more money to recycle than to start with fresh oil....but someday that will change for sure.
