Our wheelin' rigs are off road only and I've tried both manual and auto, for me and the wheelin' that I do a manual would be a big step backwards, so I had to vote auto.

I can see where an auto would have alot of benefits offroad. But at the same time I have always drove a manual all my life, and I have to have one in my truck. Auto’s and manuals both have there advantages and disadvantages in different circumstances. I don’t think anyone could say for sure which one is the best given every circumstance and every situation combined. However, I think it’s just the one you prefer. Which one do you want to have and live with. For instance, as much as I like manuals if I were going to buy a tow rig, I would probably consider an auto long and hard. I have took a 3500 1ton dodge down to Florida and back that had an auto. I believe like someone posted before that an auto in a truck like that, used to tow heavy loads, wouldn’t last as long as a manual. But, I really liked it a lot more than I did riding with my cousin in pretty much the same truck with a 6 speed. It seemed like it took forever to get through the gears and get going, and I don’t plan on hauling anything near as heavy as they do on a regular basis. So I would probably consider an auto if I were to get a truck like that. So basically get what ever makes you happy. And I’m planning that a nv4500 in my 64 suburban is going to put a big smile on my face.

Well, I already have a super built 700r4 waiting to go in, but I considered the manual swap because some mentioned it was somewhat easy. Well, after thinking, theres alot more into it than just swapping it in. Like the speedo for instance, what would I do for that, its controlled electronically in the 241....

A short throw for the 465 exists

If you get one out of a 88-89 Ifs pickup with a Aluminum top. Yes. The shifter sets about 4" back from a Iron top (found out hard way after cutting hole!):p: No nuckle busting here!:D

hmmm, is the swap really worth it? possible to put a 241 behind the 465?
Yep, I have that setup. But swapping the 241 for a twin stick 205. The 241-465 adaptor might be up for sale soon!

I'm an auto man, with a manual truck. My sub has the 465. I've had both. Had an F-350 with 460 and C-6, that worked well. Have had two chevys and a dodge with the 4 spd granny manual. I love the granny gear with 4-low. However, when you're spinning tires up a steep hill and start to lose momentum, the auto shifts without missing a beat. It is next to impossible to downshift a manual fast enough although I know there's probably some guys who would argue with me about that. I also sure do like that tourque converter for easing over things.

My wife drives an 05 silverado with an NV4500. We both agree that an auto would have been a better choice for the daily driver part this thing does. When we start towing the Sub with it I know it will outlast the 4L80E, so I guess it is a good tradeoff. I haven't wheeled a manual since 95 and that was all desert/dune driving. an auto would have made that a lot nicer. I like drivng two footed with the autos in my offroad trucks now, but I guess that could also be accomplished using a hand throttle.

I voted for manuel but currently have an auto and it will probably stay that way. My wife drives the truck at least half of the time out on the trail and she much prefers the auto. I don't think I would swap in a 465 either but a 4500 I may do without her permission.

I haven`t seen a thread like this, there may be, but I didn`t look:D I`d like to see what you guys prefer for trannys, and why.

Myself, I prefer automatic, 700r4 to be exact, reason being, I got a super built one waiting to go in. That, and its over drive, so pretty good MPG on the highway. I`m sure I would love a standard, but I think that I would get lazy of shifting all the time, which is another plus to an auto, and you can always ride the gears if you want in the auto, if you get the urge to:D

So, lets begin.

Im running a 700r4 in my blazer because its a daily dirver but i dunno bout the good mpg on the highway:doah: lol for being on 38's i guess it isnt that bad but I wonder what it would have been with a th400. At one point I was getting almost 13 but then the wind picked up and i was getting 10 ish at 70-75. It would be nice to have the granny gear, but even with my 203's 2:1 low i still have plenty of grunt to do anything I want.

i would take a bullet for my 465

I don't think you'd have to, they are BULLETPROOF you know :wink1: :D

But I know what you are saying, and I fully agree!

I LOVE manual trasmissions! they are so much fun! Way more control and you never have to worry about burning it up. Plus sticks get the power to the ground better.

Manual tranny advantages:
Superior strength
better control
WAY more fun to drive
more reliable

For anyone that says that manual trannys are inconvienient, then you need more practice behind the wheel or you need propper gearing.

We gotta link up and beat our K-5s through the mud once I get my 465 205 combo in. THERES NO MUD ON CAPE CODE AND IT DRIVES ME NUTS. Should be done in about a month or so once I save up the oney for the rest of the parts

Manual automatic valve body, D is automatic, 3,2, and 1 is manual. That way the torque converter can still be used to keep the ride smooth so you dont break anything(ok experienced manual ops can do it but im not experienced).. would work best for a vehicle that sees all sorts of trails and even for a daily driver.

Id like a built 700r4 with a manual automatic..i wouldnt bother putting one in my TH350 because id only get solid 2nd.. only a 3 speed..

The guys on this site that are in the area are trying to plan a wheeling trip later durring the summer. Check out the regional section, and better yet spend the $25 on a full membership so you can post in that section. :D
