What do You think is the best gear lube???

any of the fully sunthetic gear oils oughta be plenty good. IMO, its more important to change oil frequently than it is to buy uber oil and change it once every 10,000 miles.

Same thing with motor oil, IMO it'd be better for your engine to use $0.39/qt oil and change it every 1500 miles than it would be to use $5/qt oil and change it every 3000.

I work with a 65 year old man that says there is no reason to ever change differential fluid unless it is contaminated, EVER.
 
Since I am in AZ and don't deal with much water or mud contamination I run Redline. I run there Heavy Shockproof gear oil. It isn't cheap though. $8 per quart.

I really like it though and would recommend it as long as you don't change gear oil all the time. It is a full synthetic and you will never have metal to metal contact with it in you diff.

Water is more dense than petroleum, even in crude form. Therefore, the water would be at the bottom of the diff, not the top. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

I was told by a mech. that he has replaced more diffs. that people ran synthetic lube in than regular lube
The reason was it works too well , did not get warm/hot under use and resulted in water contamination (condesation not evaporating ,out the vent)
A freind of mine allways found water in his diffs. when he changed to synthetic (regular fluid changes)
He didn't put his truck in water
Mabey this is just a problem in a northern climate...
Has anyone else noticed this?

I just pop the damn cover off so i can see how the gears look and see what kind of crap is sittin on the bottom of the diff housing that doesn't come out with the oil.
I may be "lazy" /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif but i still do that job right. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Come on,,, /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gifit's not like it's a really hard job to do or anything,,, /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I just wished i had an electric pump to pump the new oil back in with, now THAT would be nice /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Go to Harbor Freight and get there little drill driven pump. It chucks into your cordless drill and has a 3 foot hose on each end. One end goes in the gallon container of gear lube and the other in the diff, I fill my 14 bolt in about 20 seconds /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Oh yeah, I run whatever is cheapest, usually that super-tech or whatever it's called.

Well at least you know who know not to buy an axle from.
Hmmm lets think about this a bit.
The lube gets hot under use, heat breaks down the viscosity.
Wear... umm metal is gonna start to wear away in a diff/gearbox and without a filter it it just gets circulated with the lube.
Before ya go spouting off about the magnets on the bottom...

I buy gear lube by the 5 gallon pail through my shop(Mobile 75/90) bought a pump to fit on the top of it from harbor freight.
I have a suction pump sorta like a grease gun for trail use.

I get 4 gallons of lube and a gallon of Power Punch.
Dump the Punch in and set the bucket where it's warm.
Chuck up the paint mixer and churn that for a bit and use as required.
Lube never needin changed unless contaminated /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I've seen a great many differentials with gear oil that looked like ground up doggy poo and smelled like dead animals.

They still worked.

It's the same gear oil that'd been in there since the Dawn of the Differential.

In the case of my truck, since November 1983. It was used for a plow truck.

I change my gear oil every four months or so. It hasn't had water in it since I bought it. The main reason is that my vent tube is way up in my box side where mist from rain isn't located and moisture from one's own exhaust isn't. A side effect of combustion is water... just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there. My seals are all good, the thing that leaks most is my differential cover. I like to play in water, I'm more worried about water getting into my transmission and motor through the dipstick tubes than anything else. It ain't deep until the bed of your truck has water in it.


If you want to talk about lack of maintenance... let's talk about ATF. You're supposed to change the filter every 20,000 miles. How many people do that? I think that 5 quarts of ATF and filter (grand total of around $16) is far more important than three quarts of gear oil and a tube of RTV (around $15).

I think a transmission is far more likely to fail from neglect than a differential. But people neglect both.
 
I never said I agree with him, I think he's a complete moron for saying that you never have to change gear oil.

You still use gaskets??? Permatex "The Right Stuff" is where it's at! Get a caulk tube of that and your set for at least 5-6 diff drainings.

most of the time..I get very small amounts of water..
and I wheel at least once a week during the summer..

And inspecting a bullet-proof D60/14bff combo isn't

went to full syn in everything and I'd swear it got me at least 1 mpg improvement, if not more.
Mobil 1 in engine, Amsoil 2000 in NV4500 and 205, and Mobil 1 gear lube (found at AutoZone) for diffs.

I have been told that the GM syn trans fluid is Castrol SynTorque. The Red Line MT-90 which I ran for a while gave the best shifting
