What Do You Think? Spare Tire Carrier

i'm in need of a bumper and tire carrier too. i'll be buying one from DIY. support your local vender when possible too. that's the style that i want also....half tire half cans.

Be warned that these trailer spindles have a history of breaking off over time. The base of the spindle fatigues from repetitive stress of holding a big 'ol tire up on a lever. There are a lot of them in use, so I would guess that only 10% or so have failed. If you plan to run small tires (33?) it should be fine. Absolutely support the carrier solidly at the other end.

The best solution is to move to a double-shear setup. I just got done rebuilding mine with a 10b axle front hub assembly, which is still single shear, but a lot bigger.

I used one of those for my ramcharger bumper. Just went to the Tractor Supply Store and got the largest hub I could get. It rattles around a littler but it has a lot of weight on it. I use it for a 30" tire though, I don't think I'd use it for the 33" on the suburban.

i know a couple guys on here have talked about using a 10 bolt hub and spindle and just capping the end to keep moisture out, i think it would be alot strong than the spindles they sell and bearings would be easy to get if the wore out

No, don't cap the hub, weld a stub-shaft inside the spindle and use a lock-out on top. This lets you lock the swing-out in any position just by turning the knob. Then all of those parts are spares for your front end - bearings, snap rings, lock-out assembly, etc. I will have pictures of mine up after everything is back from powder coat.

now thats thinkin with your nogin.

that is the idea of the week if you ask me. :waytogo:

my only problem is that gets real expensive when you got a 60 .

So here are the parts - a cut spindle and a machined hub. I did the hub on a mill - the idea was to get a stronger connection to the swing arm tubing by leaving those little ears on.

Here's a comparison of the trailer spindle with the 1/2-ton stuff:

only thing i would do is find a rubber cap for the lockout. so rain water dont leak in all the time. kind of like the bearing buddy caps. :waytogo:

Yes, this is on my list of things to do. Do you know of a product?
