I've had it for about a year, just finally am getting around to wrapping up the project myself! :D what sounds like it could be the problem? some plugs dont seem to be firing, tomorrow im going to set the idle and find which plugs aren't firing. anyone have something else that could be wrong, we had a vaccuum leak and a slight fuel leak which i fixed before the final night video where it idles smoother.

Are you sure that you've plugged all the vaccuum ports? (Carb / manifold etc?) the way it surges up and down makes it seem like there's still a vaccuum leak somewhere.

Is the timing in the ballpark? Maybe the timing is just way retarded?

we've moved the timing all over, it really likes certain spots better than others, so were keeping it in that area, also in the night clip greg, did it still seem to have a vaccuum leak?
 
Are you 100% sure you have the dizzy installed right?

I'm no expert, but I've heard of guys having them 180* out of phase and they couldn't get them to run right. Once they found the problem and re-indexed it things were perfect.

Just a thought.

Maybe PM "4X4HIGH" if he doesn't jump on this soon. He'd know for sure....he's "scary smart" on stuff like this. :bow:
 
timing

Sounds and looks a lot like timing is way off. probably not 180 off but I saw some puffs though that carb on your first start and it never did seem to idle right. Get new plugs too, im sure the wires are new so they are probably good. Find a timing light and check your distributor position by verifying tdc on #1 cylinder and then setting the rotor. Oha and by the way cool video. The sound came through great on my 5.1 computer speakers? What did you use to film it?
 
I went through the EXACT same thing with my 355... was running just like that until i hooked up all the vacuum lines the right way and changed the manifold gaskets. Lots of rtv and new gaskets= no vacuum leaks. Not saying its the manifold but it sounds like a vacuum leak.

First get a timing light on her so you can check the timing off then go from there... my guess is a vacuum leak.

Were you given throttle in the night clip?

Oh yeah... you'll definetly need new plugs if you keep runnin it... I'd bet money they are nice a black right now.
 
Man, yours spins the tires putting it into gear... Mine couldn't spin the tires unless I was pulling a hard turn to whip the rear end around, lol
 
The idle should not go so high when you go to park or neutral. need some carb adjustments and sounds like timming is off. What mods are done to the motor besides just the bigger C.I.s? Liek cam lift and duration, what size carb what manifold? Did you just set teh timing by ear or use a timing light? Timing light is essentual. Also if yuo get a vacume guage yuo can adjust your idle mixture so it reads the highest vacume while in park. Also are you running a locked converter in your tranny? When going from neutral or park and into gear you should only drop a few hundered RPMS. But if your converter is always locked that would explain the high drop of the idle when in gear.

that is because he is idling so high when not in gear.
 
i set the idle high so i would only have to use brakes to test it because the gas pedal is kind of sensitive and i didnt want to jump through any walls. I know the timing is off and i need to check for vaccuum leaks

Looks like that hunk of iron in the front end made it sag some.

So when will you be wheeling it?
 
next month hopefully, i need to get all the qwirks worked out, i have a help wanted post on so cal big dawgs. i just need help tuning the carb, timing and stuff. also i need to fix shifting. it goes 2 D N R P .... wierd, i think i have the linkage backwards or something, plus i cant get the doubler working up to par. so a lot to do still
 
so how many gallons of gas did that video take? :thinking: ha sike, sweet truck, when i build my mud truck its going to be a 502
 
Brandon where you located at in so cal? If you want to load the truck up on a trailer and bring it out near palmsprings sometime I can help ya tune it. I am curious why you only went with 8.5/1 compression? That is really low compression more for a supercharger or a turbo.

...or to be able to run cheep 87oct. (or lower) fuel with a very mild cam in hot temps.
