I pulled apart my 14 bolt today and this is what I found:

What do all the numbers on the ring gear mean? Also, I know this axle sat outside for a while. What causes the "oil" that is now more grease like to turn into what it has? Thanks!

The 10 and 41 = 4.10 gear ratio

The others are probably build date and other?

Water, rust, mud and oil makes that greasy mess you have there.:doah:

It means you have 4.10 gears. The gears were made in 1987 I think.

Clean her up and and make sure the gear teeth aren't chipped or cracked and BAM you now have 4.10s

I pulled the pinion out by removing the pinion housing (???) on the front of the axle to help make cleaning a little easier. When I did the needle bearing the pinion ride in came apart. No biggy. Question though. What is going to be the easiest way to clean all that crap out? I tried scrapping/scooping as much out as I could, which wasn't much. I sprayed a little carb cleaner and that helped then that crap out. Any other ideas? Pressure washer maybe?

I used three cans of brake cleaner on mine after I drained everything out. It was not anything like that though. Might buy six.

Will the carb/brake cleaner eat any seals or ruin any bearings? Should I pull the axles and clean the tubes too?

Kris

idk if its an immediate build or if you know how to setup gears or not but i would definately yank everything that i knew how to put back together and do it from there.

that is a sf 14 right?

If there is that much crap in the diff, my guess is that you need new berings/seals anyway. And yes, I would clean all of it.

Should be a full-floater, judging from the pumpkin shape. Remember to count turns of the adjusters should you take the carrier out.

That is definitely a FF 14 bolt.

I would be willing to bet that all the bearings are toast. The pinion bearings will be the first to go, so if the third bearing fell apart (like you said) then I'm sure the others are done for.

The oil was contaminated with water/mud which caused what you see now.

It definitlely has 4.10 gears as said earlier. You will be very lucky if those are salvagable.

Gear setup isn't a simple remove/replace operation, search on here if you need more info on that.

i'd be worried about tooth wear as well as wiped bearings and seals with that diff. That is an aweful lot of grit...

It's also likely to have worn the seal surfaces on the outer spindles. I refuse to buy any diff I can't see the guts of first. That to me looks like an anchor.

I got the axle in trade. Just something the guy had laying around he didn't want and I thought I might use, but wasn't really part of the original deal. Anyhow. Yeah, its like soupy, thick, stinky mud. I don't really want to take the carrier out as I don't know how to or have the tools to set up gears. I'll try and clean it out and see what happens. If nothing else, maybe I'll have some spare parts for another good axle when the deal presents itself. And yes, it is a full floater.

The gear oil also lubes the wheel bearings, it runs out the axle tubes, so they may look the same. I don't think you'll be able to clean it out good enough without taking it all apart. Good Luck.
