What DOES the computer do on 84 K5 ?

Mostly the carb, if you have a stock 700r4, then maybe lock up TCC, (I'm alittle fuzzy this) which you want to keep. Do you have a speedo cable? If not then the computer runs your speedo via the vss

does your hei dist have a serperate 4 wire weather pack connector ? if so its for the ESC electronic spark control .

I replaced oem dizzy with mallory.

Speedo cable goes direct to transmission from speedo gauge

When i pulled oem carb, the weather pak connection is jus dangling on firewall

Do you have 700 or t350?
Sounds like your computer might be dead weight.

My lock up is fine, i had some vacuum thingy go bad that wouldnt let trans do what it needed to, once replaced it worked. Thought it was lock up solenoid in trans but it wasnt

You have a 305 originally, if so and it has Calif emissions it will have a
computer that controls timing to prevent knock. It should have a 4 wire pigtail
coming thru the firewall on the left side of distributor.

I have a 305, it had air pump etc, got rid of all that. I have a 3 or 4 pin weather pak i disco’d from old carb and it jus dangles

I don't think the computer in an 84 is capable of running Minesweeper, let alone anything to do with the trans.

Yeah I have forgotten, virtually all of my ccc experience. Think I might have the GM CCC train book in garage somewhere.

Trucks never got the CCC, except in California. For 49-states, the computer you find behind the glove box is the ESC, as mentioned above. You can bypass the box by jumpering 2 of the 4 pins in the weatherpack connector together. Or you can convert the distributor to the non-ESC version by swapping the ignition module. It's probably also possible to make an aftermarket dizzy work with the ESC box in the opposite fashion, but it's possible nobody has ever wanted to.

I remember looking at using an ESC box for knock sensing, feeding an EFI system or something. Although they are probably nearly free, there was something that makes generic amplifiers more worthwhile, I just can't remember what the reason was.

I have hei mallory dizzy when i replaced carb. I disco’d ecu and fired it up, didnt drive it but dont see issue.
