I made a deal with my cousin to change his engine. He supposedly bought a 350 that I had to pull out of a C60 firetruck. It appears to be a small block chevy (it had an adapter plate, so that it would hitch up to the monster standard tranny) the harmonic balancer appears to be from a 350 but the flexplate that came off his old 350 doesn't have a big enough centerhole to fit the crank. I was told that it has to have 3 freeze plugs on the side if it's a 400sb (it has 2). How can I tell if it's a 383? Or am I just looking at it wrong?
 
First off, how many bolts holding the valve covers on? 400 SBC's came with either 2 or 3 freeze plugs on the side so that doesn't help you any. 383 was not a factory GM engine but rather a stroker engine that people commonly build. How many bolts holding the intake manifold on?

How about taking a pic of it for us to determine SBC or BBC. With the info i just gave we can determine that much for you anyways.
 
There are 4 valve cover bolts each. 12 Intake manifold bolts. casting numbers I found 3970010 and E145. Also has left side dipstick.
 
4 bolt main with 2 peice rear seal. My problem is finding flexplate that will fit the crank. I've ordered one for a 350 but the center hole is too small.

if you orderd one for a 1 peice rear seal newer motor the crank style is diffrent. soinds like that.

my friend pulled a 350 from a c60 bus and didnt have any real problems.

Hmmm... I know there are slight differences on the 350s that came in the heavier trucks. The heads have larger accessory holes for example. Perhaps the crank is unique also? :confused:

If all else fails, try the stealership ;)
 
I think the commercial applications used a unique setup for the flywheel flange on the crank, as they used bigger diameter flywheels.
