Hard to say for sure but looks like a 292 or 250 Straight six

I'd say a 292--they have taller blocks, side covers, and the fuel pump is back further--and the passenger side motor mount is in a different spot on the block than all the other sixes--so if you buy one,TAKE THE BRACKET that goes to the frame too!...the tall side covers tell me thats most likely a 292....

It looks like a 250 to me, get the stamped numbers off the machined pad where the distributor is and i'll run the numbers and tell you for sure what it is.

This engine is in an airplane tow truck from 1981. Does the 292 have good low end torque?

Yeah there decent I have a 292 I built with used 327 Pop-up pistons ( they share the same bore and pin height so its a direct swap) and a cam and intake and header I got from clifford performance. it moved my 69 Chevy around pretty well

My book says a 1981 292 puts out 210 ft/lbs at 1600 rpms!..cant get any lower end torque than that unless you go with a diesel maybe...thats with a 1 barrel carb..

The Clifford Research intakes to swap a small 4 bbl on these were very popular here some years ago,and many dirt track racers ran 292's and won many races with them--one guy "Bugsy Stevens" is a local legend who ran many of them, using the 327 piston swap trick and reworked head and a reground camshaft...I remember him having a few PV544 Volvos with a 292 and one with a BBC that was hard to beat..
