what fluid for NP205?

I have had 205's with both ATF and gear oil in them. I heard that if you have a 205 mated to an automatic it is better to run ATF incase of a seal leak and gear oil mated to a manual.

I can not verify this and ran gear oil instead of ATF mated to a TH 350.

my trans takes 90wt oil..... and so does my np205 .....

bough 1 gallon of gear oil from autozone & a nifty hose that goes onto the 1 gallon jug... :wink1:

1 gallon = $6.50
1 quart = $2.67

so buying the gallons is cheaper even with buying the $4 adapter..

Later on ATF was used. '91 I pulled was ATF.

I switched it to 80W90 so it matched my tranny and diffs.

I didnt know you could run gear oil in a tranny, I have my 205 mated to a turbo 400 so can I run gear oil in it?

gear oil if for manual trannys only only put ATF in your automatic tranny.

Rumor has it if you run a manual trans and a 205 then you should put gear oil in the 205.

If you have an automatic then you should put ATF in the 205.

Hear say only. I have no idea on its validity. When I had a 205 mated to a TH 350 I ran gear oil in THE 205 and never had any issues.

All my shop manuals (pre-'85) listed 80-90 oil for ALL 205's.

early manuals list 80-90, later ones (like my '83 manual) list ATF. Regardless, use the same oil you'd use in your diffs. ATF doesn't protect the bearings and gears the same as gear oil, the chart I saw showed a pretty big difference in bearing life between the two.
If ATF gets into the case because of bad seals, it's not the end of the world, but I recommend starting with gear oil.
