thanks

If you go to Randy's Ring and Pinion they have some handy calculators that you can use to figure engine RPM based on axle ratio, transmission ratio and tire size. It's a heck of a lot faster than doing the math!

My gut feeling is 3.42 is too low.

What tranny? If its 700r itll be a dog if the 350 is stocker. IF its TH400 or TH350 you may be okay, Im running 33s w/ 700r and have 4:10s. IMO, its a perfect combo.

Am i wrong to assume you mean too HIGH?? I'd say he should have no problems running maybe even lower than 4:10's with a 700r-4

Just my opinion though

I know one time I dug some google stuff up inorder to find my gear ratio. It had a whole chart that was like 305/sm465/208 = 3.73's, 350/sm465/208 = 3.42's etc etc. It had all combinations listed.

my friend has a blazer with a stock 350tbi/700r4 with 3.42s and 35s and it is a turd. Ive driven it before and it doesnt even hit overdrive till you get going about 50 mph and even then it is constantly shifting between 3rd and overdrive. the only thing its got going for it is the low first gear in the tranny and I would be scared for the tranny's life with gears that high and 35s.

A lot of it depends on the motor. Personally I think the stock TBI is fairly impressive when geared correctly. 3.73's w/31's moves pretty good off the line, but with 3.42's and 35's I think you'll be disappointed.

My '86 with TPI (and headers, etc), 33's and 3.42's will kill the '87 in acceleration, even though the gearing is quite a bit worse when you factor the tires in.
