what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

I have a 79 w/400C.I. 350 turbo auto. w/ 3:73 gears 35-12.50-15 mudders. I'm trying to decide if I want 4:11 or 4:56 gears. it is my daily driver so I want it somewhat good on the roads but I want it to hold me back on the trails also. right now the 3:73s don't slow me down at all I have to ride the brakes down the trail. let me know what you all run and are you happy with your choice?

Thanks

I'm running 3.73's with 35's. Not bad but I was running 31's with these gears before. I'm going to 4.11's next summer. Going to a 400cid from the 350cid helped but still miss that extra torque.

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

with no OD I wouldn't got over 4.10's... I got 35's with 4.10s and at 75 I'm running about 2900 RPM...

I'm running 3.73's currently, and plan to go with 4.11's when I get my new axles in.

I am putting 4.56s in the Jimmy as we speak. It has 350, 700r4 and 35" Goodyear MTRs. I will be putting 4.10 in the burb shortly. It has 350, 700r4, and 35" BFG MT

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

if I put 4:10s in will that slow me down on trails or will the tranny still pull me down fast?

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

I am also debating about what gears to use. I'll probably go with 3.73s, 35s, with a sm465 tranny.

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

I'm running 4:56 with 35" tires and a 700r4
my opinion 3:73 to 4:11 is not going to make a big difference for you, you might want to consider 4:56-you can always go up in tire size

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

I've got 4:10 with 35 BFG AT's It works alright off road as for the down hill stuff If I'm in 1st gear and Lo-4 It does great.

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

If you had the 465 I would say the 465's since you will not have the slip. I just put 4.10 in mine with tall 32's. Should be ok with the 35's I'm tunning 3000 rpm at about 65-70 (speedo is off). BigJBear is running 4.65's with 35's and loves them on the trail but for running down the hwy it is turrning some RPM's. He has a 80 with lock up converter so it's not quite as bad as a 79 would be with no lock up. If you do a lot of hwy I would say go with the 4.10's I('m debating 33's or 35's right now.

I don't need no damn shop manual, I got a pornographic memory.

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

you know what I haven't done much rock crawling, but I have done a LOT of hill climbing with this thing. I can tell ya what I have absolutely no desire to have a lower geared axles.

now, in my k5 that has a 700r4 I'm running a 31" tire with 4.10's and I absolutely love the combination. I have OD there though.

the sm465 has really low gearing... and I also have the np241 which also has really low gearing. now if you got an np205 I would say you gotta drive the thing a bit off-road before you decide.

my k5 is not a dedicated trail rig because I use it for a lot of daily driving also. I'm not willing to make this thing so trail ready that I don't like the way it drives on the road.

if it were me a touch higher gearing in the t-case would not pose a problem... when I put this thing in low / low it really creaps. I like the combination I got right now.

another thing you gotta consider is if you 35" tires are really 35"... unless you are running an interco tire chances are you really don't have a 35" tire. my 35" tires measure exactly 33" so I'll be going to an interco 36" tire when these are run out. I probably will not change the gear ratio either, but we'll see. depends on how well the new engine will turn those tires.

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

leave your gears alone so you can fly on the freeway and add a doubler to crawl off road.
the absolute best combination. wish it had been available when i did my drivetrain the first time and i wouldnt be saddled with 4.88 and 39" tires cruise rpm on the freeway about 2600 rpm 55mph

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

4.10's and 33's. I couldn't be happier. I used to have a Jeep with 35's and 4.56's and it was a great combo too. Could still cruise OK on the highway with no overdrive. Get the 4.56's or you'll end up kicking yourself later.
