Hey guys i just got a 5" lift and 35"s for my dd dodge and now im gonna be getting new gears and a detroit for the rear. the current gears are 3.5's. Truck specs are 1999 ram 3/4 heavy duty. gas 360 and dana 60's at both ends.

What gears do you think would work good for me? im looking for more performance than economy but still want some mpg. Im thinking either 4.56's or 4.88's

Got my lift and tires from 4wheelparts. Tires came fine 35" pro comp xtreme muds. But when the lift got here they sent me a 1/2 ton dodge spring and a 3/4 ton ford spring lol. Waiting for my new springs to come now.

Thanks brad.

I had 4.10 gears with 33s on my truck and it was just right. Good perfomance and decent mpg. But I wish I went with 4.56 cause now I run 36. Now its gets good mpg but the perfomance that I had isnt there. Now if your truck has od that will make a differnce. I run the 700r on mine. At highway speeds in Drive keeping up with traffic(speedo dont read right so 65-70) I turn 3000rpms and in Od it drops to 2100-2200. That was with the 33s. which is about the same as 35s and 4.56. If your truck has over drive I would go with 4.56. If not then 4.10. But if your ever going to run bigger tires go ahead and get 4.88.
Hope this helps.

I've got 35's and 3.73, runs good on the highway but the crawl / acceleration is lacking. Will be swapping to 4.10 shortly.

The Colorado guys I've run with that had 4.56 gears generally ran 37" tires. Just for frame of reference.

4.88's if your looking for the performance end with some economy. I have 4.56's and it was ok with my 35's but when I had 4.56's and 32's it ROCKED for performance and power & still got good economy.

If I had a do over I would do 4.88's or 5.13's in my truck now since I am now at 37" tires.

A 3/4 ton truck definitly needs some grunt so I would do 4.88's for sure. If you plan on going bigger then 35's then get 5.13's. You have OD so that makes up for alot.

First off, I'm pretty sure those trucks only came 60's in the front if there was a Cummins over it.

The 60 in the rear doesn't sound right to me either.

Auto or stick? Assuming an auto, I would go with 4.88's.

its got 60's under both ends, gvwr of 8,800. And ya im leaning towards 4.88's or 5.13's with a detroit in the rear- pisses me off only having one tire at each end spinning. In the future i might be going to 37's i have the 35's on the truck now at stock height and the front rubs the plastic a lil bit at full turn. Just gotta wait like another week and a half for the correct springs to show up.

So how much should i expect to pay for the gears front/rear, detroit for the rear, new carrier for the front? and having in all installed??

The gears i have seen are like 250-300 per set and the detroit is like 650. How much for installiation?

Most shops charge ~$300 per axle.

If you get thick gears for the front you won't need a new carrier. Don't forget that you will need install kits for each axle too ($80-100 each).

i work auto all day as mechanic. never seen a 3/4 ton dodge other than v10/cummins with 60 front. 44 frt and 60 rear yes. best check your axles and the built tags if thay are still on the covers.

Its a 60 front. there is a 60 stamped in the lower right side of the pumkin. And the under hood sticker says dana spicer 60 front and rear. I got pics if u wanna see.

There hasn't been a D44 front under a Dodge 3/4 ton or larger truck since 1993.
The exception being the 94-97ish 2500LD that had a D44 front and 9.25" rear with 8 lugs and slightly higher GVWR springs. Basically the Dodge equivalent of the GM K2500LD. Didn't sell well so Dodge gave it the boot.

1994-2002 the true 3/4 and 1 tons ALL got a D60 front. Now granted it's a POS D60 with unit bearing hubs, vacuum actuated, multipeice passenger side inner axleshaft that's about the size of D44 shafts, and shares very little of it's parts with the better GM, Ford, and Dodge D60's. Don't expect it to last long if you abuse it with big tires. Lots of guys over on www.PavementSucks.com can testify to that.
2003+ they got the AAMCo 9.25" front (think 14SF front axle). Supposed to be purty good from what I'm hearing.
Rears were kinda confusing but if I recall correctly the jist of it was the V8 trucks got the D60, V10's and Cummins got the D70, and the D80 if you got the Cummins and stick...I think. PavementSucks would clarify that.

As far as gears go I say 4.56's if you are only going to be running 35's.
However it sounds like you're half ready to go 37's already so 4.88's might be a good choice. Personally I'd throw the 35's on, call it good, and run 4.56's with the rear locked. That'd do anything I wanted to do with my DD/tow vehicle. Too much stuff to break not to mention that thing gets what, 11mpg right now? My stock '99 Ram 1500 4X4 got 12-13 on a good day with the 360 and 4 speed auto, 3.55 gears and stock tires. It was also a regular cab shortbed so I bet it weighed a good bit less than yours. With the 285/75R16's I put on it I was lucky to get 12mpg.
