what gives? the 350 in my blazer is having some issues, this thing used to run flawlessly. I am currently without a choke, it is wired open. I let it warm up for at least 15min before driving anywhere in this cold weather. I went to leave work today and it started backfiring through the exaust really bad and sputtering, I pushed in the clutch and tried to clean it out hitting the gas pedal and it just sputtered some more, then cleaned out. shortly after it did it again and I floored it, it acted normal to about 3500rpm then started bucking and sputtering again until i let out at the same time my fuelgauge and tach were bouncing all over the place, ran fine after that. unless i get into it, it does the same thing. My tach will also intermitinly jump a couple hundred rpm

I am running a quadrajet

Its got new:-less than 200miles
fuel pump
carb filter
wires
cap
rotor
ac delco plugs
 
I would sugest a bottle of heat gas additive first off. It sounds like as the weather has gotten cooler you have got some condensation AKA water in your tank. It has happened to me during the fall season a few times.

If that dont work we can discuss other possibilities.
 
possibly water in the tank, will get a couple bottles of heat tonight, Any idea on the fuel gauge bouncing all around during this episode? Would water in the fuel cause the surges on the tach at idle?
 
my old yota did the same thing, put some gas heat in it and it was fine, the tach will jump with the water in it but i dont know about the fuel guage.
 
If your gauges are bouncing around that really sounds like an electrical problem (I could see the tach bouncing around with a rough running motor but the fuel gauge bouncing points to an electrical problem IMO).

It could be a tough problem to diagnose until it gets worse (if its a coil, ignition module, etc.).


On a side note, if you are letting it warm up that long I would seriously consider a block heater (they are cheap and easy to install and will save you lots of money).
 
I would check your grounds. Are you noticing any problem with your lights? 38377k5 brought up a good point. A block heater would be a good idea. Beyond just saving you the gas your cooking at idle, it'll help save your bearings and oil pump too. Oil gets thick quick in the cold.
 
2 bottles of heat, still studdering, the gauges were fine this morning, I will throw a couple more grounds on later today.
