What have I done? *Edit: NWF comes through again!*

Well I struck out at ALL the parts stores, and even some tranny shops. AAMCO was the only place that could get the snap ring, but they were gonna charge me $20 for it. :yikes: Well I finally called NWF, which I should have done in the first place! They're sending me one free of charge, expressing it too. They always take pretty good care of me with whatever the issue is. I'm glad I went with their doubler kit. I almost went with WMS, but we all know what kind of customer service I would have gotten from them.:haha:

More good news...I finished my triple shifter setup. I built it all from scratch, and they ain't pretty, but it works good. So a snap ring, some gearbox installations, drivelines, and crossmembers is all that's left. It will be good to drive the stepside again.:D

I have one of the workmate benches that I opened up and sat the 205 on. I put the idler shaft in through the back side and up from the bottom. This way I could use a pick to line up the shims so they didnt get pinched. I got the idler shaft started by tapping it with a brass mallet. You don't have to put parts in the freezer.

Also...use some bearing grease to hold the shims in place to keep them from moving around too much.

Thanks for the reply, but I already got it back together. Didn't freeze anything, just got everything stacked up, and slid it into place. Used a screwdriver to line the shims back up. Then I hammered it in from the top. Then I realized that I had the gear in backwards, so I took it all apart, then did it all over again. At least it's back together.

Only issue is, I was thinking that with all the shims and everything on those tapered roller bearings, that there would be some sort of preload on the bearings after I tightened down that nut. I actually have what feels like a little end play, maybe a couple thousandths. But hey, the gear is only used in low range, and it all worked fine earlier, I'm sure it'll work now.

If I remember right it is supposed to have a a few thousandths end play.

Really? Well I hope you're remembering right then. I just thought it was odd that a tapered roller bearing would have end play. With pinions and wheel bearings as my experience, that is a very bad thing usually. I guess these are different. Anyone know where I could look that up?

I was a super small number. Like 0 to 2 thousandths if I remember right. Find out for sure though. I read it in chiltons or haynes when I built my 1st 205 4 years ago

Slight end play when cold.

I see. Well it must be right then, cause it was very slight end play. I wouldn't have known it was there if I wasn't looking for it. And it was very cold out in the shop. Even so, heck, it's a 205! It's not like they go bad. :p:
