I think you will find most recomendations for the carb will be Quadrajet, and I would agree and your cables should adapt easily to the changeover.
Cam selection for the TBI will be limited by the computers ability to handle it. Look for wide lobe seperation, 112-114 degrees, duration @.050 of less than 210 or thereabouts, and lift around 450 or less depending on flat tappet or roller grind. Chips can be burned to help but it is a tough line to walk if the wrong cam is chosen.
Some guys like the Vortec heads and these make good power and are relatively inexpensive. The drawback is all that is required to use them, including special intake manifold, push rods, guided rockers, fabricated egr system etc. which can make the low buy in more trouble and expense than bargained for. The other options include, reworking/modification of the stock heads, L98 iron or aluminum heads (angled spark plugs could interfer) Iron heads by Dart or others, or even aluminum heads, all of which will allow you to bolt everything you already have back in place.
I am still debating the head issue myself and will probably end up with heads compatible with my intake and accesories. Whatever you choose, post results so we can share the knowledge.
