Well here is what I broke this weekend. Been thinking about getting one made out of thicker tube. What is the tube thickness of a stock shaft (this is a stock shaft that was shortened)? How thick can you go? I am not going to drop much coin on this and a local shop is going to do it. No hi dollar drivelines for me yet.

there was some talk on pirate about people running 1/4" wall tubing, but they said that the u-joint life would suffer the most from the heavier tubing.

For a rear driveshaft .083" thickness is recommended, you can go up to .092" but the shaft may vibrate even if balanced. Also, due to the increased mass the pinion and transfer case bearings may take a beating.

Since front driveshafts are rarely used on road and usually under low speed conditions you can probably get away with thicker material.

My front shaft is .120 wall. Had a lot of weight on it and no problems. It did get scraped and now looks like a barbers pole.

i would rather deal with a broke- or rather worn u-joint then a twisted up d-shaft. Choice is easy- build it tough cuz you KNOW you are gonna knock it good at some point.

I run .120" wall front and rear. 1410 yokes...

I ran a shaft that was .200" wall for about 18 months, and recently had to do my 14 bolt pinion bearings because of it. :doah:
