Can I remove the entire choke system on a q jet. I am thinking of doing it because it dosn`t work, and my truck lives in a heated garage. Anyone done this? will the carb still work ok?
BTW it is electric.
OR I might try a different coil in the choke thingy and see if that works.

Choke is for nothing but cold starts but the truck being in a heated garage isnt gonna make a difference. The block is still cold.

Removing the choke plate on a Q jet can screw up the air flow through the idle circuit. I've experienced this myself. I don't think the hp gain would be measurable.

Oh all I did was to wire it open all the time,
I didn't remove it.
Just removed the mechanism that opened it, mine was the heat stove style.

The hp gain should be noticed, because the secondarys aren`t opening. If I removed the choke and the lock out for the secondarys it should work better. Yes/No?

as many years that i have had to deal with people removin the choke on a street drivin vehicle the next one i find will get the carb stuffed someplace. reason i feel this way is everytime we need to move one of these vehicles its always a pain in the a$$ to start and move fast n easy. always turns in to hell for 30 min.

you might gain .05hp at the rear wheels removin that thing. its there to help you leave it alone.

and unless you have the correct tools and info dont mess with the 2nd on a qjet. thay are super sensitive to adjustment and dont like bein played with.

If it's electric, just fix it & leave it.

Did you check the feed wire to see if your getting voltage? May be that simple.

and just in case you refuse our wisdom, at least you can be educated informed...linky

You never mentioned the secondary issue in your OP. If you must screw with it, wire it open or something, just don't take the plate out.

I'd just fix the choke or convert it to a hand choke cable--it might start OK in your warm garage, but what about after you go somewhere and park it outside at zero degrees?--you'll be like me,the guy who's diesel started fine while its block heater was plugged in at home--but are bummin when its time to come home from work where there's no place to plug it in and now it refuses to fire up!--and your forced to risk using starting fluid...

I have wired chokes open on many of my vehicles in the warm weather and noticed a slight gain in gas mileage, but the poor running, bogging, stalling and other woes I had to endure the first few miles got to be discouraging and more than once almost caused an accident, when they would stall out when pulling away from an intersection,etc...I prefer hand chokes, but remembering to fully OPEN the choke when you have one is hard to do,many times I caught myself driving around with the choke better than halfway closed--didn't do my rings any justice, and the oil gets diluted with gas,etc..one truck I rigged up an idicator lamp to remind me the choke was still "on" ,that helped a lot..

Thanks I have that on my computer now:bow: very good info.

As for the rest of you guys... Thanks also, I will try to get the choke working as intended by gm.

This is not a street driven truck,it is a truck I put together with a bunch of trucks I got for free or cheep. I built it to replace my quad for getting around our farm with. It is nice to have heat and stay out of the wind.

After I get every thing working properly I will regester it for the road.
It`s gona take some time.

Ok I took your guys good advice and tryed to get the choke to work.
I did what the books that I got said, it works great for starting the truck, but it won`t shut off,or open up.
Just floods the thing out.

I`ts to cold out side to piss around with it right now, so I think I`ll say to heck with it for now. It runs good with out it, and not good with.

More reading and warmer temps and I`ll try again.

mmm

the choke is not suppose to shut off...

is it an electric choke? If electric, the initial adjustment is critical...too lean (closed), it will be too lean when it opens, too rich (open) and it won't have any affect when cold...

It`s electric. I checked the setting the way its described in the info you gave me. Seems to be good, but the choke plate on top will not open by its self after is warm, I can do it manually with my finger, but when I move the throtle linkage it slaps shut again.
The choke pull off works,by sucking on the hose, and there is power to the wire.
The choke cover, the round plastic one is non adjustable, there is a small tab were it is supost to fit in the housing.
