My opinion would classify that as a cam like the 60's muscle cars, maybe a little warmer than those engines. But not full race like top fuel dragsters, etc.

I'd say a 3/4 race cam would still be way too much cam for our trucks. Be more fun to drive that cam on the streets in a sleeper.

It's almost a full race cam...

It's old people speak for a hotter than stock cam. Also refered to an "RV" cam. Most often a mild upgrade over stock. I wouldn't trust a used flat tappet cam though. Too easy to mix up the lifters and flatten it real quick. Unless it has the cam card...it's anybodies guess as to what it really is.

well my point is, that term is pointless.

I mean if you consider full race to be the max...that could be anything from a T/F cam (.850 lift and 300* of duration @ .050) to any top tier motorsports engine.
So it would be 3/4 of what?

3/4 race cam was just a generic term for a HOT cam from back in the days. When you buy a cam for a flatty engine some people still sell them as 3/4 or full race cams.

right Scott, I remember the bench racing and the 3/4 cam stuff, but haven't heard it in a couple decades....there are much better ways to describe a cam profile than a generic 3/4 race cam.

Yep, hate that term. Always hoped it meant .750 lift or at the very least something like that. Most of the time it doesn't mean anything.

I always thought it meant 3/4 of the total 360 degrees of rotation....so basically a cam with around 270 duration? :dunno:

Yep old hotrod talk.

Might as well just buy a new cam, they aint that much anyways.

My gpa asked what cam I put in my blazer, I said the lift and duration specs, and he said no I mean is it a 1/2, 3/4, full race cam?? I was like waaa........ :dunno: He said back in the day they had 3 choices.. I was like gpa, theirs a ton of different ones now lol :haha:

And a full race cam would have 360* duration? :haha:

DUH!.... really?

Since the full-race cams usually end up around 300*, those are typically called 13/16ths cams....especially on Craigslist.

Surprised you didn't know that one Scotty! :thumb:

It's just old terminology. That being said, ten years ago a kid put a Crane Cam in his engine, and the box had a sticker on it that said 3/4 Race Cam. It made me feel leary about using a Crane camshaft....

exactly....:waytogo:

Always make me feel like the person that says it has no clue about engines....just a term they picked up cause it sounded cool to say it to all of his buddies down at the mall....

I always assumed that 3/4 term was pertaining to the lift as Kert mentioned...
